Would you say you're a member of the "Furry Community"?
The actual collective "community", not just "being a furry in general".

Now, before I start, I should point out that I myself am not a furry in any way. I don't find the practice offensive, mind you (with the exception of extreme behaviors), but I find myself tired of always being on the inside of society looking out to the outside people in their own personal cliques and I'm being forced to stay indoors because I don't belong. I'm tired of being part of the masses and only hearing about "those people" through the grapevine. And I'm not referring to furries in this sense. I'm referring to anyone in a collective group that's closed themselves off from openly talking about themselves because society shut them off. Gamers, furries, swingers, otakus, bronies, etc. If the "fandom" of a certain thing has a hardcore side that makes the rest of the fandom and collective society hate them because of it, I want to know the individual people that cause that side to exist. So today, I'm starting with furries...

I'm gonna simply speak openly here. Apologies to moderators if I'm breaking rules. I'll edit or remove whatever's necessary to stay par for the course.

I have a couple friends who are furries (the two I'm referring to are both men and are actually in a relationship together, although I doubt that matters to the story. Just full disclosure for honesty). They're hardcore furries, as far as I can guess. Then again, I don't really talk to my friends about their intimacy, that's creepy to do. However, I had heard in the past that "being a furry" is not a sexual thing in origin. Except, I've tried talking about normal stuff to them, trying to get a little bit of background info on their stance on things relating to the "furry culture", and ultimately trying to learn as much as I can. However, with those two, "furry" seems directly synonymous with "fetish". I think to them, the two words are one in the same. Literally every conversation steers towards a sexual undertone in some way. Hopefully it's just how those two perceive things, maybe they're more "hardcore" than they like to admit and the majority of the furry community that interacts with each other are more tame. But there are times where talking to them makes the "Furry Community" seems to be simply a "Kink-Sharing Community". Is this the case with most furries, and nobody wants to admit to it? Or is there a more complex scenario going on and I'm just on the wrong end of the conversation?

If you're a furry, are you part of the "Furry Community"? I keep using quotes because I'm aware communities aren't official things, and they're simply groups of like-minded people. There can be hundreds of different groups of people all doing different things all calling themselves the same "community".

But to wrap up my current (spastic) train of thought:
If you're a furry, and are part of a community, are you only open within that community? Or are the members of your family, friends, or members of your household aware that you're a furry and the community to you is just a friendly get-together? If this question doesn't make sense, I understand. I'm nervous. With my friends, I can't ever get very far in the conversations, so I doubt I'll get very far here either. But I'm still gonna try. If it sounds like I'm ignorant, it's because I am. And I don't want to be.

Furthermore, would you be willing to share what your "fursona" looks like? Do you use your own name when you adopt that avatar, or does it have its own name? Did you draw it yourself, or did you hire someone to do it for you? Or did you just steal it from some site?

If a public post is too much, feel free to PM me your reply instead. I honestly want to know, and it seems difficult to get the answers I'm digging for instead of the usual blanket "If you're asking why I'm a furry, I don't even know why myself". No, I'm not asking WHY you're a furry, I already know the psychology behind that. I'm asking why the COMMUNITY I keep hearing about does what they do.

Maybe this is coming across clear, maybe it sounds like confused rambling. I understand why open discussion is difficult, especially factoring in that "I'm one of THEM", but I want to learn about these fandoms and why they share so many similarities even though nobody wants to admit that. Psychologically, the fandoms I mentioned earlier are all the exact same thing. The only thing that changes is the medium being talked about.

If it's difficult to talk about openly, then how can anyone hope anything will change unless someone actively bridges the gap?

For being someone that happens to be part of some Furry Communities here on the net. I'm going to put in my 2 cents regarding of the Furry community.

Personally, I don't really mind about the whole Furry community in general, and sure, some of these Furries wants to be more identify as a certain animal instead of a human (and no, I'm not going to sound political or anything), and personally, I don't really care too much because of that, that's their life, and if they want to live as a Furry, that's their life, and they have every right to pursue their life on how they want to pursue it.

As for the whole explicit/sexual nature of Furries. Yes, I have seen quite a bunch of these said explicit/sexual images on these Furry Community websites, and personally, it doesn't really bother me one bit seeing these kinds of images on those websites (maybe it's because I'm so used to see these types of images, and I have been since 2011 (just after I turned 18), and that is why with the experience of seeing these images, I can tell on what's explicit and what's not.

Plus also, I know they're quite a lot of people that dislikes the Furry Community, which to be honest, I'm not sure why you guys would dislike the Furry Community in the first place. Ok, sure, some of the reason that some of you all think that the Furry Community is a bad community and all is because they ruined your well known childhood and all with posting explicit images involving these characters from animated series, especially with the Big 3 (Sonic, Pokemon, & My Little Pony), and sure, those people are weirdos, but hey, it's the internet, and face it, the internet wouldn't be the internet without these type of weirdos.

But note, being a part of these Furry Communities even despite that I'm not really considered a full-fledged Furry myself. Not all Furries are bad when it comes to ruining those animated series (either gaming or television/movies), in fact, a majority of Furries doesn't even get involved with any kind of animated series at all (even the big 3), and only focus on just being a Furry in general, and some, not even in an explicit/sexual way, but some people label these Furries as "
Sexual Freaks:.

------

So, would I considered myself as a "Furry"? In the long term, like I said, I'm not a full-fledged Furry, but I'm more considered a "semi-Furry", and what I mean about being a "
semi-Furry", I'm on multiple Furry websites and all, and have full respect for the entire Furry Community, but I don't really dress up full on Furry, nor attend any kind of Furry convention.

wytchcraft: What type of suit are you making? Like, what is it of? Also, I hear those are expensive. Exactly-ish how expensive are they to design? Hundreds? Thousands?

IgorBird122 : Sounds like you're on the more tame side of things. That's good, had my suspicion that a tame side might not have existed. But you brought up something that made me curious. You said you're not a "full-fledged furry". To you, what is full-fledged? Or even, whaat's the bar-to-entry, I guess? As in, how "furry" can someone be before they're "accepted" by these communities? (I say accepted since every time I ask my two friends to play DnD or Magic or even just talk to their furry friends, their response always steers to "Well, the REAL question is if they'd accept you?" without them even trying or asking that group. And it's all because I'm "one of the many".) Clearly the bar-to-entry isn't a suit, since you're part of these communities but you don't own a suit. Btw I realize this sounds like a stupid question. Sorry

wytchcraft : There. Spelled your name wrong in my earlier reply so the summon didn't work. Hopefully this one will.

Zeldisaster : My fur suit Is of a fox.... I would be using fake fur, as it is easier to obtain and work with.  The cost of a fur suit can range in price if you are having someone make it for you, it can be in the thousands. If you are making it yourself.... it can also be pricey, it all depends on the material you use. Sorry for the delay in response, I don't come on but for a bit in the morning, as I am currently unemployed, and looking for work.

Zeldisaster : Basically when I said "Full-Fledged Furry" Those are Furries that fully dresses up (head to toe), attend like multiple Furry Conventions every year, is a professional artist, is registered on at least one Furry website, and involved in packs (groups of other Full-Fledged Furries). A semi-Furry is someone that doesn't do all five of these things, but they are part of the Furry community in some way.

wytchcraft : That is true, I've seen Fur suits go as high as $4,000, but like you said, these people has to buy the material which isn't cheap either, I've been to arts and craft stores, and they cost by square foot, like a piece of standard fabric (used inside of the suit) can cost like around $3 a square foot, and the exterior fabric (with the fur) can cost anywhere between $5-$10 a square foot, and if you do the math, it adds up a whole lot.

if you take an average human body at 6 foot, it takes 22 square feet to make an average 6-foot human, and you have to add a little bit to that square feet to make the suit fit, so I say like 24 square feet you have to make the suit (and that's just the torso and legs), you have to take care of the head which would be another about 16 square feet, then another 5 square feet for each of the hands & feet (which is 20 feet total), and about 5-10 square feet for the tail, so there, you're looking at like 60 square feet, but that's just the insides, but you have to do the outside as well, so you're looking at about 120 square feet, but then you need to add a tiny bit more for the outside (so it can completely fit), so say like the total is 125 feet.

Ok, now for the price, 70 x $3 = $210 (interior), 75 x $10 = $750 (exterior), now combine them, $750 + $210 = $960, and that's just the suit itself, now you have to considered the labor cost, which will depend on the person, and how much time they have, which some of the popular ones charges like as much as $1,000 just for the labor (which they spend like an entire month just to make the high quality suit, which makes a thousand seems plausible, because face it, not all stores are going to have enough material at one time), then you have shipping & handling to worry about as well, and other factors, so I'll say that the suit adds up to $2,500.

So yeah, fur suits aren't cheap.

I am very much a furry, it's practically a part of me. I wouldn't say I'm only open with that community, I have friends that know I'm a furry, and my sister and to a smaller extent brother know I am. Parents don't know as I really don't see a reason for them to know.

My fursona is named Boured, like my username and is a very heavily modified version of a Dusk Lycanroc from Pokemon. I didn't design the base nor the design of the look, that was from an artist I commissioned. I simply gave them a rough outline. I can't really show any examples here as all of them are pretty saucy in nature, but that's about it.

I wouldn't say I'm constantly at odds with people outside the community, I don't see a point in fighting if they attack me for reasons that aren't justified, so I just smile and tell them to have a good day.

You could say I am a member of the Furry community, and you would be right. I read a number of Furry comics regularly and participate somewhat in the communities. However, I do not have a fursona and have no plans to ever have one. I want to be content with the body I have right now. And how can I do that if I spend so much time pretending I have a different one? It’s not that I wouldn’t like a furry body or even a fursona. But I just don’t have it as a priority. The main reason I follow the comics I do isn’t because they’re Furry comics. It’s because the content of the comics is so good, that it makes them worthwhile reads. Comics like Scurry and Furry Experience feature relatable storylines with great characters. Scurry features art that is so polished and vibrant, it might be considered by many to be the most “artful” webcomic our there (although the Wormworld Saga gives it a run for its money). There are other comics I follow (and others I’ve tried out), but there are a number I won’t follow because of the content. I recognize a lot of the Furry fandom focuses on sex. I won’t attempt to percentagize it here, but it is enough that I am careful about even what comics I click on.

But I don’t just follow Furry comics. There is this one movie I saw (thanks to the creator of “Furry Experience”) that brought tears to my eyes, it was so good. Like, Pixar good. I’m going to leave it here.

I would say "No". But part of me thinks it would be cool if I was the nemesis of furries. Like I would not be in any way interested in furries, and because of that, inadvertently become part of the community but in the role of a enemy. It could happen.

This thread is wild.
Don't really like most of the answers here so, have my cold take :

For most people, there's no point broadcasting being furry, gay, trans, whatever to people that :

A. Don't care to begin with
B. Will dunk on them for it
and
C. It's none of their business

It's 2019 and dumb kinks are still taboo.

On3On : So let me get this straight, and please correct me if I'm wrong. In your mind, people (furries in this instance, but any interpersonal group can apply) should stay away from places with a mixed and varied audience and instead stay locked into their own niche hangouts?

Because I, a non-furry, am trying to learn about furries. Maybe not to join, but simply to learn. And NOT being part of those niche communities, it's difficult for me to track down those who are serious about their interests. Especially in a way that won't be immediately shunned or rejected on the basis that I'm an outsider.

People who adamantly reject a group's existence are creating a rift between that niche and us. It happened with nerds before, and it's happening with furries now. And all that does is create more interest in a community that's harboring more hatred, eventually spreading that hatred farther than it needs to go. Streisand effect, anyone?

It's gotten to the point where even though I have a friend who is a furry, he doesn't often talk to me because he thinks I'm one of "them". The ones who reject furries just for liking what they like, which I think is unproductive. Why segregate for no reason? He's always so scared to open up that he simply shuts down whenever I try.

Please, explain in -your- words what you actually meant. Because currently, it seems like if you're a furry, you're a hate-filled one. And if you're an outsider like me, you're a stubborn one.
