Who has a Switch, Smash, Nintendo Online, and a desire to destroy all your friends in ruthless combat?

That's right, it's tournament time. Time to fight for large amounts of Viz and glory.

I'm definitely in on this, this is a great idea and should be a lot of fun. Do we have any set date on when this will be?

In the interest of sparking activity, sure, I'll bite.

How much of the details of this idea do you have worked out? While conditions may make it difficult on our end, if we know how this is going to work, I might be able to wing it. I'm actually excited about the idea of getting to play against friends in Smash, even though I don't imagine I'll make it very far.

Also thinking that if there's a lot of participants, it could be season format and then a tournament.

If we've got a whole week to pick a date and time to play, that would work great. We could take a trip to town and catch some good wifi for the match to minimize lag.

One thing I was wondering about was whether or not my brother and I would need to be playing on different profiles. We're unlocking all the characters on his profile so we can get them all faster, but more importantly, I think my brother's profile is the only one with online service. Would he and I be able to both participate using the same profile? Game just came in yesterday and we skipped Sm4sh, so I don't have any frame of reference for how the online matches work.

You know, I really like the idea to have a Super Smash Tournament here on Vizzed.

The only thing is the whole Nintendo Online services, which some of us won't be able to join because of this issue, well, that and someone not owning a Nintendo Switch, not owning a copy of Ultimate, and/or an unstable internet connection

Other than that, having a Smash Tournament is a great idea to have, and if it becomes reality and it's posted, I might give it a shot.

I may be mistaken, since I barely play online in any game at all, but going off what I remember:

1) The Switch has two online plans, the individual and the family plan options. If you have the individual on his account, you will have to use his account online to participate. If you have the family plan, he just has to list you as family, and you will be fine.

2) The way the lobbies work, you can have all like 8 people in one lobby, or you can make small private lobbies for individual matchups, it's somewhat flexible in this regard. In this case, however, I believe you need to have your opponent listed as a friend, because Nintendo isn't like Sony or Microsoft, and creating rooms and loading them up isn't as simple as it is in other games. Even if you don't, you should anyways, because Nintendo is more fun with friends.

Whether the lobby will be everyone at once, or individual lobbies based on a game by game basis is up to Zander obviously (I think the latter works way better, for a variety of purposes, based on Switch architecture, Smash's programming, and simplicity's sake), but I hope that answered your question a bit.

But, it looks like it won't be a problem because he told me just a bit ago he wasn't really interested in the tournament and that I could use his profile. Thanks for the reminder to send my friend code out, though. I forgot I even had one.

I was told there was a smash tournament going on and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't highly interested!

On a side note, you don't need friend codes. They're nice to have but you can just create rooms and give them passwords. I find it much quicker myself.

I'm interested, depending on the day. With the christmass coming up, a weekday during what most people have as some kind of break might work better than a weekend. 

I don't have the online plan yet, but I plan on getting soon anyway.

Depending on the timing on the tournament I'd be all up for it I won't be home the 21st till the 23rd so if it happens during that I likely wouldn't be able to take part in this tournament.

We are now less than a week from getting enough users, so it's time to start this one. All players who sign up now will be in their own new tournament.

Here's a draft and timeline.

Each match will be 5 lives.

For every match, both participants must post a photo of the match results, including who won/lost, and damage dealt in this thread.

Tiebreakers will be damage dealt.

All 9 spots will be awarded Viz.

Here's the proposed timeline.

Week 1: 12/17-12/23
All players are free to battle whoever they want. Up to 20 battles total. 6 players with most wins advance. Player with worst record gets 9th place.

Week 2: 12/24-12/30
2 players with most wins are off this week. Remaining 4 winners fight in a best of 5 series. Best 2 (7th and 8th place) eliminated players fight in best of 5 series.

Week 3: 12/31-01/06
Remaining 4 winners fight in best of 5 series. 5th and 6th place players fight in best of 5 series.

Week 4: 01/07-01/13
2 finalists fight in best of 5 series. 3rd and 4th place players fight in best of 5 series.


Thoughts?

Not sure how Week 2 would go given that most people will likely be busy being out of town or the like during the week from Christmas to New Years. Perhaps just ignore that week and move it to the next, and shift everything else accordingly. Maybe that's just me though, take input on that from other people as well.

I also think that bracket-style might be ideal for a tournament like this (ideally, you would need to wait for a number of players that fits within the realm of 2^x. 2, 4, 8, 16, etc). "Choosing whoever you want" could pretty likely constitute just choosing someone you probably think isn't good. Better to just have random selections by throwing everyone's name on some sort of randomizer and building a bracket.

For the first round, might I suggest using a ratio of won:lost games instead of the just the number of won games as an indicator? 

I say that because if I play 4 rounds and win all 4, I would placed below someone who played 12 rounds and won 5, despite having won 100% of my games. 

Light Knight : I could do that but some people might think it's cheap and some could take advantage. 7 people could play a ton of games but 1 person could play and win just 1 game and make it in.
