In any normal situation, Sonic would win no questions asked, but People seem to be forgetting something about Mario here. A star makes Mario invincible in ANY form. So Mario could be Rock Mario from SMG2 and easily match Sonic's speed and power and could try to defeat him in the short time limit. Or it could be Paper Mario and Sonic can't hurt him (And he is a harder target because of the 2-D thing) and he could use the peach beam to take away Sonic's invincibility absolutely own him. And it goes on! This is more of a creative circumstance or scenario battle, but I digress. In casual terms though, Super Sonic would OWN Star Mario in a normal battle.

Sonic's chaos emeralds got knocked loose in Sonic 3 by Knuckles without the use of anything fancy.  I think that Star Mario would whoop Super Sonic all the way back to square one if he got the chance.
