All right, so, I just finished my first pokemon game ever, Pokemon pearl. However, I had bought a handbook on all the different pokemon. It listed their types and possible moves as well as a picture and what I am guessing to be their most updated pokedex entry. Also used a gen 6 type chart. While there were no cheat codes or anything like that. Is it technically cheating to play like that. After all, it was a huge help, and I probably been stuck many more times than I actually was since I probably would not be able to remember every pokemon in the game. I'm not really worried about it either way, but was curious.

Knowledge isn't cheating. Some of that information is even legitimately placed in various parts of the games so knowing which pokemon are what types is totally fine regardless of where you get the information from.

Now if you cheated and looked up an answer to a puzzle yeah that would be cheating but since this is different it isn't.

Not at all. It's no different than using a strategy guide, which by no means is cheating either. There's nothing wrong with doing your research before or during game play, and a lot of people would actually encourage it depending on the game. Knowing your enemy is half the battle, and knowledge is power, as they say

Cheating would be along the lines of exploiting a bug in the game, or using a game shark to manipulate the game's code. Anything less than that is just coming prepared lol.

I personally don't like to use strategy guides or wikis in my playthroughs (unless it's Minecraft), but what you describe sounds different from a strategy guide, to me. If it's basically just a run down of all the Pokémon and their types/moves, it's not cheating by any stretch of the imagination. Far different from from a step-by-step walkthrough.

Nah, it's not cheating. For cheating I take as doing or obtaining something you normally wouldn't be able to do or get, and getting a breakdown of all Pokedex entries is something you yourself can create through sheer experience.

No wonder if it's of big or little help, anything you can collect on your own is not cheating, even if you don't collect everything alone. After all, if it was cheating, then my role of Game Guide Writer would basically lose its meaning and shouldn't exist.

You can buy guides for any Pokemon game and they show all sorts of info, so it can't be cheating if Nintendo puts out the info for everyone to get.

zanderlex : First off, good to see you again! How'd that pokemon game go? Second, good point! Thanks. I was kind of expecting a lot of hardcore fans of Pokemon to say that was cheating, but I guess I'm still a pokemon master, fair and square!
