Marvel recently announced that Iron man is going to going through one of their famous (or infamous depending on your point of view) makeovers.Link here: http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/06/entertainment/riri-williams-iron-man-marvel/index.html

Personally, I don't like this. It's not being progressive, it's pandering. Why do they have to change the characters we know and love just to be pc?I mean, take Star Wars for example:Finn and Rey are good characters that everybo-mostly everybody likes. Now, imagine if Disney had just changed Luke Skywalker to be black/female.It wouldn't be the same, because he wouldn't be Luke Skywalker. It'd be someone else.

Marvel or Disney or whoever's making these changes is giving mixed signals here, on the one hand, they say they're being progressive and accepting by changing all of their most popular characters to minorities, but on the other hand, they're changing their most
popular characters. They're trying to let their new characters ride on the success of a well known name. How can they claim to be progressive if they're so afraid that making an original character who happens to not be a white dude will turn away everybody, that they just make the white dudes into minorities.

If I like a character, it's because I like them as a character. Not because they're minorities, on because they're named after a character I like.Making an existing character a minority won't make people like them more. Not if they really liked the character to begin with.It just makes it easier to play the "you're just closed minded" card when people complain.

I'm all for minority characters, just make them new characters.Don't take away the ones we know and love and replace them with race/gender lifted imitations just for some good PR.

But, anyway, what do you guys think?Agree or disagree, it'll be interesting to hear where people stand on this.

I don't know what you're talking about. If you don't think that Lashaun Skywalker is a great idea, you're obviously sexist and racist and bigoted and a horrible person and should never reproduce.

Also, "Iron Man" is sexist and oppressive, and was set up by the patriarchy so men could lay around and read comic books all day while women were forced to clean the house, wash the dishes, cook food, take care of the children, etc. If they're going to do this right, than it obviously has to be changed to "Iron Person" and Riri Williams has to be trans or lesbian.[/sarcasm]

Okay, I was expecting one thing when I started reading this, but then when I read the article I was like "Okay, that's not what I was expecting at all."

Honestly I found out about this I would have been like, this is just wrong, no matter what the change is, it shouldn't happen, but after what happened just a month ago with Captain America, it's still shocking news, but not as much. Not sure how to react to this specifically though because it's an entirely new character basically. I

m0ssb3rg935: Shhhh!Don't give Disney any ideas! P.S summoning fail.Sorry.

Eniitan : I don't blame you.It took me a bit to get my bearings on this one too.It kinda just hit me upside the head, sort to speak.

zanderlex : To me, it's a bit more jarring
because it's a new character. With the new Captain America, he was already an existing character and 'Merica's sidekick who happens to also be a minority character, so you could understand him becoming the new Captain. It makes sense. But when they make a new version of a character solely to make them a minority, it's pretty jarring, because there's usually no rhyme or reason.Just "We changed this guy to some new guy you've never heard of before because reasons".

Spidey243 : In all honesty I am still not sure what to say. I want to say what I want to say but then I feel people may look at it the wrong way which is why I am keeping silent about this until people have said their own opinion's about having an ironman as a woman and as a black woman at that too.....

Well, it's not like they're changing Tony Stark, it is a new character, who is just taking his place. Now, I don't know what happened to Tony, for him to seek a replacement, maybe he's retiring, or sick or injured, I don't know about that. But this actually sounds pretty cool to me (not him retiring, but having Riri Williams take over).

Also, from the article it didn't seem like pandering. Brian Michael Bendis says that, "I think what's most important is that the character is created in an organic setting," he said. "We never had a meeting saying, 'we need to create this character.' It's inspired by the world around me and not seeing that represented enough in popular culture.". So, it's not they said, "Hey, let's change Iron Man to be another race and gender to appeal to more people." He even says he's heard tons of negative criticism, but they're going through with it anyways... That doesn't sound like pandering.

To me, it feels more realistic, super heroes age, they get injured, they're real people who face problems just like us (and, you know, other not relatable problems, like world destruction and junk.) And sometimes, they need to step aside and let the new generation show us what they can do. (Even though I do really like Iron Man). Well, that's my opinion anyways.

F. Starr:I have to admit, I'm a bit interested in seeing how this plays out and what they do with her Hopefully it'll turn out well.Though, whatever their original intentions, what with the large amount of character revamps that seem almost obligatory, now miiight not have been the best time to announce another revamped character.Obligatory or not.

(Why do my summons not work?)

I haven't really known what's been going on with Marvel for some time now. It just seems like it's completely insane and weird, and i think that what they're TRYING to be is progressive, but as you said, this isn't. It's just being lazy and changing characters. Like making The Falcon Captain America, or Thor a female. It's just weird.
