Has the Western world shifted to the right?

Has hatred of migrants been born out of not understanding the nexus of International relations and foreign policy in creating refugees.

What has happened to the world that would make people think this was acceptable in 2016?

Personally, I'd prefer a Monarchy if we'd have good kings/queens. I don't want to choose between two candidates that will both do America very egregious wrongs and are selfish. I love what America was established upon, and we're moving away from that...but we tend to put the blame only upon the candidates, when; in a democracy, the biggest fault lies with us. We have chosen the bad. Now granted, our Democracy is not a perfect one. Our freedoms to choose are being restricted, including the ability to choose what candidate we like. This isn't right. America deserves to go to the dogs right now. We could have it all, but we're throwing it away bit by bit. We're possibly worse off than some countries that don't have the freedoms we have because many of us are actively fighting against those freedoms or exploiting them to gain advantage over our fellow Americans and others. We're probably all guilty of it to some degree, but it's running more rampant than ever now. I consider leaving this country often...but I'm not prepared to do so yet financially, mentally, etc. It's not right that people like me should suffer because others have done this country wrong. America was once the greatest country on Earth. I'm not so sure that's true anymore.

How dramatic. I don't think a hatred of immigrants is anything new. They come in and take the low paying jobs and get hated by the people who's jobs they're taking. The Irish, Chinese, Mexicans, etc. have all gotten some of that. The sky isn't suddenly fallen. America will be fine. If anything I wouldn't be opposed to changing some of the laws we have in regards to immigrants. The fact is people have been blatantly taking advantage of some of our laws. If I recall correctly the criteria of being born in America makes you a citizen was made to give ex slaves citizenship. Now people from all over come here to give birth. It accomplished its purpose, it's pretty outdated, and should be gotten rid of.

How does hating a migrant or immigrant population have anything to do with the end of a democracy. There are countries with democracies that have a variety of people, culturally, religiously, and ethnically diverse. There are countries which are democratic with homogenous populations.
