He doesn't even have to accept. It's even less effort than that. It's literally zero work. If the murderer has to "accept" or "get last rites", the murderer becomes a "co-redeemer", and Jesus isn't 100% savior. Salvation is simply received as a free gift. Totally free. The imagery given is often that of a doctor. If you have the Black Plague, and I shoot pennicilin into your veins, I've saved you. You did nothing. Whether you consent or not, the medication heals. The only thing that matters if I injected the pennicilin. Likewise, salvation is entirely dependent on God.
