Who is your favorite historical author? What I mean is what authors do you like from back in the day? Not current authors or even fairly recent authors, what I mean is the guys who pretty much shaped what writing has become such as Shakespeare, Dickens, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Edgar Allen Poe, etc.

I like Wells thanks to War of the Worlds and I really like a lot of Shakespeare's plays, but I'd have to say that my all time favorite has to be Arthur Conan Doyle, who created Sherlock Holmes, which in turn has created some of my all time favorite book/movie characters and villains, and had eventually lead to numerous re-creations.

Who is yours and what books do you like the most by them?

By far, my favorite author of historical fiction is Avi.  He's written books such as the Newbery Honor-winning "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" and "Nothing but the Truth" and the Newberry Award-winning "Crispin: The Cross of Lead".  My favorite of the books of his I've read is "Nothing but the Truth".  It's simple, yet absolutely brilliant.  The ending is something that has stuck with me for a long time, and will continue to stick with me for the rest of my life.

EDIT: I read more carefully and understand what you meant.  Actually, I don't think I have a favorite author of those who have long since come before.  My favorite authors tend to be more contemporary.

Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe put a lot of Drama into their writing, and if there's one thing I love it's some good drama.
Romeo & Julie was my favorite book in 9th and 10th grade at my high-school, and Poe is just a really good horror author, I haven't read any of his books on a long time.

Also the author of The Great Gatsby.

pennylessz : I LOVED the Great Gatsby. I had to read it during some year of high school, probably my Sophomore year, and even though I never finished it for some reason (Probably class was behind and had to move on) I really liked it, thought it was nice and dramatic at times, and I just loved the characters.

I told myself that I had to see the movie when it came out, and I loved that as well, in fact it was one of my 5 favorite movies of 2013, and I'd have to say that whoever made that movie had done an amazing job at getting the scenery and lifestyles of what America and New York was like way back then.

Mark Twain would probably be my favorite historical author. Other than him, I really do not have a favorite historical author.

Pretty much all of the authors mentioned in this thread. I really like Edgar Allen Poe in particular, since he is so dark and gloomy all the time.
