I remember having this bladder issue when I was 8 or 9 years old. My bladder hurt to the point where I almost couldn't walk. I even remember trying to walk in my kitchen, out the back door, to my parents' car. I also remember this being the first time I had to pee in a cup in a doctor's office. I even remember being in the bathroom stall, trying to pee in the cup!

However, I do not remember what my results from the urine test were or what happened to make the pain and symptoms go away....

When I mentioned this to my parents, they didn't seem to remember it; why?

Two reasons.

Parents are old, not only do you start forgetting things more and more when you get old, they have a million more memories in their brains.

And it happened to you, right? So why would they remember it for more than just a little while if it didn't happen to them?

I'm in my 30s so I have taken tests at doctors, given blood, peed in a cup, all that kind of thing more times than I can count.  I won't be able to remember my daughter's first time because.... it's ultimately not an important event and it doesn't have any impact on my life.  Of course she doesn't have any kind of bladder infections so that's helpful in making it unimportant.

Why don't your parents remember?  Maybe they remember differently.  They weren't in the stall with you when you went.

The doctors should have their own notes and thoughts about what will help.  It's not up to you to remember.  They chart those kinds of things so they're the ones who are the professionals.

I agree with zander; when you can match particular feelings with events (whatever they may be) then you remember them better. Unless your bladder problems were so terrible they had to miss work, they will not remember it.

I remember the excruciating pain I felt when I had an arm x-rayed when I was 6 because I fell from a snow mountain. My father most probably remembers it too because he was infuriated at my school for letting us play on these mountains; no one can anymore.

As for getting the results: you could probably still get them from the medical office where you took the tests.

It seems to me that if it was a fairly minor thing that happened where you didn't have to go to the hospital, than maybe they wouldn't remember. Although parents are usually the ones that remember almost every little thing about their kids. My own mom included. She still remembers things that happened to me like 30 years ago when I was 6-7 years old that I don't remember in the slightest.

Everyone's memory is different though, and in their defense, it did happen over 10 years ago.

Because it happened to you. That is why you can remember it more than your parents. Everyone is different with memory. And just remember, look at your parents and then think that will be you one day.

Even though it didn't happen to them, I would think that they would remember something like that happening to their daughter. However, I do see everyone's point as it has been 12 years and they might not have as good of a memory.

Part of it is probably the way the brain works. As time goes on, your brain will push out information it no longer finds useful or relevant to make room for new information coming in. On top of that, the older you get and the more information your brain accumulates over the years, the harder it becomes to sort through all that information due to synapses being produced less and less often as you age past a certain point.

Well, as you grow older, your brain starts to have way too much information clogged up into it, which makes remembering things a lot harder, but then there's also the fact that the older a memory gets, the more warped it becomes. I'm not sure why, but I understand what you're saying, I've had things like this in which I distinctly remember, but in the end I was actually proven wrong, and I was completely, and absolutely befuddled. Even after being proven wrong, I wasn't sure whether to believe that it was wrong.

That's just my take on it though, this might not be the case for you. Of course, there's also just the completely rational possibility that maybe something else was going on for your parents around that time and the aforementioned incident kind of took the backseat as a result. Or maybe you dreamed it, I've done that before. I dreamed that I broke my leg, and actually called my dad to help me get my crutches that weren't there. xD

I don't know though, hope this might help open a new point of view or three.
