I look forward to this since I really love the Olympics! Its going to be so much fun to see I do hope I get to see it because I may be going on a holiday in august. But I'll just have to see what will happen when the time comes.

It's still a bit soon for it, but eventually this thread had to be made.

Let's see in which conditions are the Olympics held. Brazil isn't going through an easy time, and most venues are incomplete to this day. Plus, over there it will be winter, so let's hope the climatic conditions don't screw things up.

It will be really fun to see, even though Spain has little chances of getting any gold medals. Swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo can be our best shot (all of them in the female competition, which is a big point for us), unless Nadal comes out of nowhere to reign in tennis. Still, if we get 20-ish medals of any kind it will be one of our best Olympics ever (a number only achieved once in Athens 2004 and only surpassed by the 22 attained in Barcelona 1992).

What I really wonder is if we will see any world records being torn to shreds. The last swimming championships saw some new ones, so high hopes are held for that discipline. The big question mark is over Usain Bolt and his chances of breaking his own records.

Since the time difference wouldn't be too much of a burden this time, I do plan on watching it. Had to miss out on most of the last two but I a huge fan of the olympics so I'm excited for this year's.

It's gonna be weird watching a Summer Olympics when it is actually winter in that country. Maybe some time in our lifetime we will see an Olympic game held in Africa. That's the only continent aside from South America that never hosted one. Antarctica does not count even for Winter Olympics.

Love the Olympics. It feels like forever since I watched the last one. 2 years can really seem like a long time, longer than you think. Also, 'MERICA.

LunarDarkness2 : Since when was the Summer Olympics held every two years? Blarg. Also, ENGLAND.

I still remember watching part of the olympics, mainly because I had one of those cheap cans of coke that you can get in the newsagent stores for about 25p (got loads of McCoy's crisps as well and stuff like that, since it was from a wholesale warehouse thing).

It's good that you have made this thread about this being a Summer Olympics year. I am pretty sure that this thread won't last between now and August and someone will post the "Official 2016 Summer Olympics thread" sometime in early August.

I will be watching the Olympics later on this year and it would technically be the first time since 2004 I watched the Summer Olympics, I haven't got a chance to watch both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

Azul Fria : I think Africa could host a future Olympics, in fact, a few African cities has came close to the final bidding cities, but didn't get it. Also look, Africa has hosted the FIFA World Cup in South Africa back in 2010, so seeing a Olympics in Africa (more likely South Africa) might be possible, but we won't know till the time comes.

From memory, I do not believe Olympics were ever held so close to the Equator. My point? Since it is in August, the heat and humidity are going to be unbearable. My guess is, Brazil will finish in the top-5 medal winners because the athletes are much more used to the equatorial heat of the country.

Otherwise, Canada's performance is always very variable. A few good divers have retired since London, and Eugénie Bouchard's performance is highly unpredictable for tennis. Otherwise I can not think of any other sports where Canada stands out.

Brazil have been rioting recently about this and I don't blame them considering their government has supposedly took some bribes for the Olympics. Anyway I am not sure if I will be watching it. I tend to forget that the Olympics are on. Also SCOTLAND! (I saw luigi shout out England so why not shout out the best country in team GB).

DylanMcKaig : Wait, they are now competing on their own? I thought it was only for sports like soccer on the international scene.

As for the rioting: it happened also for the FIFA cup, and it should not be a surprise. Olympic games (almost) always become white elephants, and it is even worse in developing countries such as Brazil.

No we are still Team GB but I just had the urge to shout out my own country. Most team based sports we are separate.

I am really looking forwards to this year's Olympics because it will probably be Roger Federer's last chance to win the gold medal in singles. It is one of the only accolades that he still does not have on his very impressive resume. Whether or not he wins the gold, I will consider him the greatest tennis player of all time, unless someone else steps up.

IgorBird122 : If this thread does die though we could store it in the museum or something if it has enough discussion inside it.

Reason I posted it so early was because we could post all the news/etc surrounding the Olympics this year, although I wouldn't mind if an official thread is posted, because this hasn't been made by a staff or trusted member, this thread doesn't count.

With all the political instability Brazil is going through and the new epidemic spreading through South America, some countries are discussing whether or not to attend the Olympics.

It's a bit soon to say anything, but many countries have already given their athletes free reign on their decision to go or to pass. While it seems the Olympics will be held despite all the trouble to finish and prepare the venues, we still have to see if the top athletes will go. Not having the best of the best will lower the quality of the event, not to mention it will trash all the hype being built as the date gets closer, but it's perfectly understandable why some athletes would refuse to go.

There's still a ton to say about the Olympics yet, so this thread will remain open at least until everything is settled. Once the games do start, maybe we can think of making a separate thread, but time will say.

Also GO SPAIN!

RDay13 : For what I've read, they will play on hard courts, so Federer does have an edge. He also isn't the same Federer we saw in 2012, so it's now or never for him. We will see if Djokovic can handle the pressure, he failed so much in London and will be equally pressured this time. And yeah, no matter the result, Federer will always be the greatest player to ever exist, even if other people win more tournaments they will hardly have his class and technique.

EX Palen : Nice to see a Fed Fan from Spain as most of the people from Spain (that I have come across) are Rafa fans. Federer will prioritize the Olympics, but I don't mind him stealing a grand slam from the Djoker either. It would be amazing for Federer to win a grand slam and the Olympics this year (although that sounds blasphemous as Djokovic seems unstoppable). I agree with you in the fact that Federer is the greatest player of all time even if Djokovic wins more grand slams than him. The only way I can consider someone better than Federer is if they played with the same level of grace and class as him and had a better career than him. Novak might have a better career than Roger, but I would still consider Federer the greatest of all time (no disrespect to Novak, as he is by head and shoulders the world's best player right now).

I am really excited for the Olympics this year. I always love watching them! I am rooting for America, Spain, Iceland, and a few others.

Azul Fria : I would like to see somewhere like Cape Town hosting a future Olympic event. Or maybe even Egypt? Anyway, Antarctica would probably be better suited for the Winter Olympics, wouldn't you say?
