Just thought you might want to know. The past couple days, Freemake video converter has been trying to update itself without being opened. Today I tried the update and Avira caught it as a virus (or some kind of malware anyway). And yeah, sure enough the files it was installing were suspicious and totally unrelated to video conversion. So watch out for that.

Oh that's a good advice. Thanks for the heads up. Sometimes I use freemake but I never update in case things like that happen and stuff. Virus really tend you to give you annoyance when you don't want it there. '-'

Thank you for the advice! It never (or very rarely) asks me to update it, but I will watch out.

I just used Freemake a couple days ago to convert a video file and I didn't have the problem. I also have Avira as my antivirus software.

Is it possible that when you installed Freemake that you didn;t customize the install to where it doesn't automatically update?

tRIUNE : It's possible. It was a while ago that I installed it, so I don't remember any more.

Yeah, COMODO threw a fit on my dad's computer when trying to install it for him a few weeks ago.

It's now commonly known as a trojan by anti viruses, and I would guess part of it is because Youtube Red is a thing and Youtube is trying to get rid of all the video downloaders.

Someone should really be hosting a mirror of it in a .zip file so it doesn't affect the registry and you wont install addware, but I guess that Freemake has to make money as well...

Hmm, that's strange. I use Freemake pretty regularly, and I don't have a problem at all. Although I am sure to unclick the boxes for some of that adware that they ask if you want to DL when initially installing it.

What version are you running? I'm running 4.1.4

I've been using avast! as my antivirus software for years, and I've never encountered a problem with Freemake's stuff. Is it just a false positive, or is it honestly bad and I never knew it? I'm using version 4.1.5, by the way.

Make sure you are downloading from a trusted source.
Downloading from Freemake's site directly is probably your best bet. Other sites might have adware in their custom installers.
