Hey guys I have another question to ask. Did you at a young age watched rated films above your age or not? I even have to admit back in the golden days I did....well because when you are a kid you think everything is cool but then you grow up and think about it you say to yourself maybe it wasn't such a good idea to watch it in the first place. Even so it will be the film you grow up to watch liking for a very long time. I watched ones like Beverly hills cop 1 to 3, terminator 2, the mummy, the mummy returns, die hard Rambo and more. Was it worth to watch them? some of them yes. If I am going to be honest no you really shouldn't watch something, that is above your age because you know it may give you nightmares or not. It depends.

I totally did. Of course it was harder when I was a kid because you couldn't stream or download movies like you can now and get around those restrictions. I had to go to the video store and rent movies and if I wasn't old enough they wouldn't let us. It was annoying but we dealt with it. I did watch movies that were higher rated than I should have been watching when I got the chance.

I've always found the rating system to be a bit strange. Lots of bloody violence? PG-13... one nipple? R rating!

Eniitan : yeah, that's usually how I saw a lot of movies. My parents would watch them and as long as they weren't really really bad they would let me watch too. I was the youngest so it was really tough not letting me watch hen the rest of my family was watching it already.

Eniitan : Yeah they were great, the 2nd one was good, but the original basically set the standard.

The original MK movie basically set the tone of Shang Tsung for Me:" You're brothers soul is mine, you will be next!"
Awesomeness at it's finest.

Why cant their be good stuff like that anymore? TV and Movies these days smh

Yeap, though that's how you usually grow up with movies because you usually find out what was your parents or grandparents favorite movies at a young age and watch them with them. Like if I started watching Mission Impossible and James Bond when I was older, instead of 10 and 11, I would have never liked them.

Like you said, when you are young, you think they are cool. If you try something new when you are older, you might not find it to be cool, but if you watched the same thing when you were young and found it cool, you usually grow with it and keep liking it when you are older.

Also we don't have those same numbers here, no such thing as 12, 15, and 18 here. Its PG13 for 13 and R for 17.

I think we all have. Now in my day,it was a bit easier up to R rated movies. You walked into the video store,(remember those?),rented a movie and the clerk just rang you up. Or if your family had a movie night, that was a way to see things you were not supposed to see. I loved the original Robocop, just the overall brutality of it all, like that junior exec. at OCP get blown away by a glitched ED-209.

Well, I did watch some PG-13 films when I was little, but I was actually never told not to. In fact, my parents were watching them with me. I'm such a crazy rule breaker, I know. Honestly though, I typically enjoyed the G and PG rated ones more. Really I still do. I only watch comedies, and anything that I find truly funny is usually something that a PG film can have in it.

Games on the other hand...I played a few games back in the day that I knew my parents wouldn't have liked had they seen them (I think the "worst" I sneaked by with was Duke Nukem: Land of The Babes. Don't judge me, I was twelve. lol). But even then I was allowed to play most M rated games as games didn't usually have swearing or nudity back then (Man I wish that were still the case), so it was usually rated M for violence, and my parents, I guess, just assumed I was mature enough to handle it...and apparently I was. I grew up to be extremely gentle toward every living creature, especially humans, despite killing animals and people in the goriest ways possible in some games. Take that, media. xD

zanderlex : Thanks for telling me that. In all honesty I didn't know it was different in the usa. While we have ours like this in England. James bond was another film that I watched also for mission impossible as well. And its true. Till this day I still watch them. I think it is a good impact in a way so then you can recommend people to watch them. ^^

Oldschool777 : That is pretty much true I still remember those days. Omg robocop! It was an awesome film to watch back then. And yeah I know what you mean we had that in our family. My dad would ask. So kids what do you wanna watch? Then we would say robocop! Or terminator 2! XD

Eirinn : Wow the great eirinn was never told no? And I see where you are coming from with this explanation...yeah I played some games that were of age 15 or 18 as well lol...I didn't care because I enjoyed it. XD

I used to watch Drop Dead Fred and The Full Monty as a child, both rated 15, and I didn't know what was going on half the time, but I enjoyed watching them nonetheless.

I used to watch some PG-13 movies when I was little. And some rated R when I was slightly less little! Of course I had no idea at the time I first watched them. In fact, watching movies were mostly my parent's ideas. They never cared much about movie ratings. Pretty cool huh?

Hell, the original Robocop and T2 still hold up well today. I think the reason it was not a big deal back then is because of a few reasons.

1. People actually had other concerns.
2. If the video store clerk let you check it out, they thought you were doing for your parents or that your parents would discuss the movie with you.
3. We were not a sissified as we are today.

Damn,I still miss video stores, they were awesome. But "convenience" won out, because it was too much trouble to go to the car and drive to your local video store.

Well I mean, we had boundaries definitely, but we never really had any rating specific rules with films. I'm sure I would have been told no if I asked to watch an R rated one though. lol

And yeah, exactly. xD Hey, my parents bought me Mortal Kombat II when I was seven or eight. lol Of course what it was back then is incredibly mild compared to today's MK games, but it was still M rated.

Oldschool777 : I hear ya, man. Redbox or whatever it's called could never come close to what the old video rental stores were. I wish they would come back. We actually have one around here, but my brother has an outstanding bill there from when I was a kid, so...yeah.

I did watch some movies that were rated 15 and up (a bit milder rating system here) which my mom probably wouldn't have liked but not be extremely upset about either since I was generally pretty rule abiding and didn't go out of my way to do it.

While I was a little bit scared sometimes they didn't really have any lasting effect on me and if I was really scared of something like when I first tried a persona game as a young tween I'd likely just avoid it until later. While I don't remember the exact age I was ready, I was old enough to separate reality and fiction when I was around 11 years old which was mainly when I started watching some m rated movies. The only example I think of something affecting me negatively is when I was really young (like 6 or 7 years old) and I watched an M rated sci fi/thriller action movie which I was never able to figure out the name of after that without my mom knowing which caused me to have nightmares for a few days.

There were movies that were 11 and up but my mom never really minded me watching those. I remember her letting me see some movies rated 15 and up as well in my early tweens and she has let me watch stuff like Family Guy since an early age. She's never really been that strict with me when it comes to movies and even less so games which some do have 18+ limits (granted possibly because she's a novice when it comes to the latter) and didn't really have any rules for me to follow regarding it. After I started high school she essentially let me watch and play most anything I want, though that said she might not have been fully aware of all the games I played and I remember her being a little bit skepitcal when I wanted to buy GTA San Andreas and hearing what it was about but still let me buy and play it.

It never really affected me negatively despite being somewhat of a scaredy cat as a child :v I'd actually argue it benefited me in some ways to learn about things on my own but I realize it probably depends on the individual and when you're old enough to separate fiction and fact, I was probably just a bit earlier in realizing that than most I guess and since I was a pretty calm and quiet child she might've felt better about giving me that freedom. Since a few years ago she essentially treats me like an adult in that aspect and could care less. I think movies being the primary cause of violence in anyone who doesn't have certain mental illness or is very young is a myth created by people wanting to blame their bad parenting on outside sources.

That is why you have to be careful who you give the membership cards to. Just one person will screw it up for everyone on the account. I am glad you have a video store there, even if your brother screwed it up for you. Redbox may be more convenient in terms of availability, but you cannot beat the actual hunt for the movie or game. Walking up and down the aisles, looking up and down, handling the cases. Looking around and maybe you find something other than what you were looking for.

You have to remember part of the reason that video stores are going the way of the dodo is that people have devices that stream movies and that we have become lazy.

Fridge : I don't think I have seen those but I have heard of them in a way....I may be wrong I might had seen them once or twice in the past. @.@

A user of this : I find that pretty hilarious. I am sure some parents apart from your own did that with their kids years ago. XD

Oldschool777 : Of course it does. I understand how you feel. But sadly things change...weather we like it or not things will change into something we won't like. You can either adjust to it or not. :/

Eirinn : That's defiantly true there were boundaries sometimes. There has to be or bad films we would have seen would had affected us badly. They brought you mortal kombat at that young age?! Oh my you were lucky weren't you?

Zlinqx : yeah that may happen with different types of kids. And San Andreas was one of those gta games I played the most back then I remember listening to radio and switching it to ones I like. I don't have the game anymore but I do plan on buying it and stuff. And family guy oh yeah that was another one I still do like watching family guy. And I like the way your mum treats you. That really sounds special that she treats you that way because that is all what kids want from their mothers. Instead of their stubbornness. But they are stubborn for reason even though sometimes they can be in the wrong... ^-^

Eniitan : Yeah San Andreas was basically the most extreme example of games I played and she was at first mildly upset about it. Don't have it ither because I don't have a PS2 anymore but would be nice to get it again for nostalgia, I've seen there's a mobile version so might try it. That said I think even she would've said no at the time if I wanted to play something that is just pure blood and gore for something like Manhunt. But yeah I'd still say she's stubborn, just more so when it comes to other things like being out late during the day and school in stead of focusing on things that could be seen as more trivial.
