Has to be Luigi no question about it. Why? Well he has more of a personality about him then Mario. Yes, I know in the 30 plus years Nintendo has been on Mario's shoulders and therefore there are far more Mario games out there. But for a whole entire calendar year was devoted to Luigi. Okay 2 of the Luigi based games were re skins of older Mario games. But they still fell under the banner of Luigi based games. Were they a bit tougher then Mario games? Sure they were. But they still had Luigi's charm and charisma. So for me I will always pick Luigi over Mario if even given a choice.

I'm impressed to see how many chose Luigi; I always thought of him as less popular. I will admit that playing 3D Mario World for WiiU, I've used the other characters more than I've used Mario. I still prefer Mario but, Luigi jumps higher and reaches further away than Mario. I guess Mario needs to cut the pasta and pizza a bit. I've also enjoyed playing Rosalina.

He may not get the spot light like mario does, or get really decent single player games outside of luigi's mansion, but he's still all around a great character.

To be honest I don't know which to like more, Mario has been a hero to the mushroom kingdom while Luigi is a bit  on the lazy scared side (in my opinion, everyone have opinions right?) and he sometimes get scared soooo easily that he start acting weirdly almost every time, but I also like Luigi because he has sometimes better control than Mario, and.. And.... actually I like Luigi just because other people like him
so the moral is: I think Mario is better, I mean, that is why the games are named Mario.

Honestly, my vote of confidence for Luigi comes mainly from how fun he is to play as in Melee, as stupid as that sounds. He's so slippery, and I swear, I wish I could use Luigi's wavedash as a form of travel. He's a lot of fun overall, but has a pretty harsh learning curve, since mastery of movement options is absolutely necessary.
