Recently, my computer was infected with a trojan virus (The attacker can basically control your computer, like a voodoo doll), and strange things started happening.

I would somehow see random websites on the website toolbar, and once I somehow saw (www.adult.com),(don't go on this website, it's disgraceful, I typed it in on google)
It was pretty scary, especially for a kid like me.

So, I would like to find out whether you have had any experiences with viruses, whether it's on someone else's computer, or that your antivirus software blocked a virus before it could strike.

(Delete this thread if it already exists, which it probably does)

I don't think this thread has existed...

Once, when I was new to computers, I got a virus. My computer was more slow than a 10 year old computer. I haven't had a virus since, because that was when I thought of my computer as a toy. I've been more cautious about where I go since. Now, I really know where not to go.

A few years ago I was the KING of getting viruses: I had to re-install XP four times, and my stepdad eventually made me memorize how to do it. To this day I'm still paranoid about downloading things online.

I've gotten viruses... and only once have I gotten one so bad that I've had to do a full re-install....

you just need to be careful who you download from and what websites you go to.

Yeah, viruses can really influence your life. I pretty much never download now. (Or maybe it's because I got hit by a virus 3 times in one year) (Damn you viruses! I'll get you someday!

I have gotten virus' on the pc's i've used.
The worst was a worm virus, but that wouldn't have occurred if the ISP guy that I was talking to on the phone didn't tell me that I had to disable the firewall for the internet to work (I was 9 at the time so I didn't know any better).

A friend of mine managed to get all the trojan virus' on her pc in 2003. That was because her brother's looking up shady websites for adult materials

Or you could just exercise common sense, this would make it so that you don't get any viruses at all.

And yes, I have had a few viruses, some that are very dangerous, I have always managed to fix it though, sometimes with anti-virus sometimes manually.

Probably because everything in there is so old.

I had a virus that caused my motherboard to go bad. I had no choice but to buy a new computer. If it wasn't for that, I would not be here. (at least not on Vizzed anyway.)

Got a recent virus on my old laptop, which caused its wireless driver to die (meaning it couldn't detect internet anymore)

I got AVAST! and I'm super secure with this new laptop now.

I havent had a virus in a very long time, Norton has done a great job since I started using it. I've used Trend Micro and Mcafee anti virus before and they always let me down. I feel an anti virus program should always be a last resort though, instead use some common sense regarding what you download and sites you visit.

Yes, please do. AVG is so much better it's not even funny. My friends told me Norton actually has the necessary coding to become a computer virus, and I believe it because it's got the cruddiest security protocols and forced update system of all time. AVG can scan your computer regularly and it WILL find all infections, everything from unauthorized cookies to accidental Trojan downloads.

Why would I switch to AVG? Since Ive had Norton I havent had a single problem. I used to use AVG a while ago but I wasnt too happy with it.

To put some facts behind Didowe and Crawldragons posts:
AVG has a larger virus database then Norton and as such it protects against more viruses.
Unless you are using enterprise edition Norton it's a resource hog.
AVG updates it's database daily (small incremental updates) making sure you are up to date and protected, last time I checked Norton is weekly updates (Norton might have changed since).

Not sure what problems you had with AVG that you havn't with Norton, might be an easy fix or depend on the versions of each one you use.

Geldra: I suspect that you're not good at computers, because I have used avast on tons of computers and it has never failed me once.

And with the release of Avast 5 it got just amazing!
