What is your favorite game in the Phantasy Star series?  I am not very familiar with Phantasy Star online, so my favorite is probably Phantasy Star II.  Great story, huge step forward for rpgs, great music and characters.  One could go on.

I love this Phantasy Star series! Great games. I would say that it's basically a tie between 2 and 4 for me. The ending of 4 was so sad. One of the times in my gaming history where I truly felt sad playing a game.

The original Phantasy Star. Space travel! Those sweet cutscenes (if repetitive) for just talking to townies! The heroine, Alis, was one of the few early video game heroines.  All on the Master System!

You could tell, even from those days, it was a series that was gonna get many sequels.

I've played rpg's my whole life. I've played to the point where I keep track of how many I've beat. I'm currently at 65 games.

This being said, the Phantasy Star series is about the newest entries I have. I started with 4. Went to 2. Then beat 1. Then finally played through 3.
Strange enough, this is the order I would put them in.

4 - The only Sega RPG to crack my top 10. Fantastic Story, Music and Pace.

2 - It must have been the best rpg of all time when it came out, alas, it meets the same doom as FF1. What I mean is the pace is painfully slow, and if you are playing it for the first time now opposed to knowing what it was like to play it when it came out.... you might not have the patience. Great music to set the tone though.

1 - Once again, probably the best of its time at the time. The dungeons were hard to traverse for a rookie but all in all great game.

3 - I get why people like it. Very innovative stuff with the choosing who to marry and having that affect the game play due to what character you might get... but... once again such a snails pace for that game that its harder to appreciate it as much playing it for the first time in 2013 instead of 1991-2-3 or whenever it came out...

I'm gonna be a hipster and say the first one, I love the master system, and it's one of my favourite rpg's on the system.

I was never really a big fan of this style of game, but there are very few games in this genre I do like, and phantasy star 1 is one of them.

The music was also pretty good.
The second one was also good, just not as good as the first one in my opinion.

Phantasy Star IV is definitely my favorite game in the series. It has the most impressive storyline in the series, super impressive graphics for a Genesis game, and an epic soundtrack. No other game in the series has wowed me as much as Phantasy Star IV .

Overall it's Phantasy Star IV by a wide margin. The soundtrack is still one of my all-time favorite, the graphics were quite impressive and references to the past gave the game a touch only a handful of games have.

Story wise my heart belongs to Phantasy Star III. Although many PS purists hate the game, I think it was nicely done, spanning over 3 generations and having 4 distinct endings. It was very realistic; the more Layan blood your character had the weaker he was physically but the better at magic he was. It reflected in his appearance; Ayn and Sean looked much weaker than the others.

I would have to say Phantasy Star IV is my favorite of the series as well. It is the one that I replay the most often. The combo system in combat is quite fun if you can pull off some of the big ones. The cut scenes are quite manga-esque. The vehicle combat is entertaining. The mission board give fun side quests. Much of these things I had never seen before when I first rented this cartridge back in the early 90's.

I have to go with Phantasy Star 4 as well. To me it had a great story, interesting combat mechanics (combos were really awesome when you could pull them off) and the music is memorable for me. I've played it through multiple times now and could get right back into it in a moments notice if I wanted to. Fantastic game.
