It could possibly just be architecture like furret mentioned. Somebody may of actually damaged that area and put a hole in the ceiling and they thought they would just place a box there to cover it up. I don't think it could be a surround sound. It could be a vent though. They may of put it in side ways or something and that's the only way they could cover it up, I mean I have heard worse stories behind peoples building reasons lol
