So I've been going to this Starbucks for about 9 months. There's a barista there who I talk to every week when I go there. We really hit it off when we talk! I can tell she's not just being polite to me there for work because she seems very recepitive and asks me questions in conversations too. She's my age (we're both college sophomores, at different schools).

I do NOT have a crush on this girl. I mean this as friends.

If she did NOT work at a Starbucks I go to every week, or if she was just my classmate or something, I'd definitely invite her to hang out, no questions asked.

I've been hesitant to do so because she's a barista.

But shall I ask to hang out after our semester is over or no, since she's a barista, honestly? If so, how should I phrase the question? If not, don't be afraid to say so. I won't if it seems too risky and awkward.

xxeliza321xx : go for it! you'll never find out if you don't ask. i mean, what is there to lose? all you're going is asking if you wanna hang out. that's not risky, or awkward. but make sure she doesn't think you have a crush on her, as that might not work out too well.

noahs_brother : I would, but what's discouraging me here is that yea, I see her at work. I've read on Starbucks websites (not Starbucks' official site, but on others if one Google's "Starbucks barista secrets" or something) that baristas are there to work, not make friends. I've read a section that said something along the lines of "We're not your friends. We have close-ish customers, but those are very few and far in between, and we bet you're not one of them."

I mean, I almost KNOW I'm a close customer here, being here for 9 months, but the "we're not your friends" still throws me off a bit.

So still go for it? Does every Starbucks barista have to hold that very same opinion?

I think you should go for it. You guys have been friends for 9 months. Ask her if she wants to hang out or something. If you both have boyfriends, then ask if she wants to double date. That's a not a bad ice - breaker in my book. 

Well, I think it'd be best to ask her to accompany you to an event that's going on campus, if there's one going on. That's how I managed to hang out with this really pretty girl, as friends, for about 3 1/2- 4 hours, just doing events around school together. Albeit, it's a different scenario since, like you said, you see her during her work shift. If it's possible, I'd try to catch her when she's not working and then ask; that's what a few people have done while I worked at school. Hope this helps a little bit /o

xxeliza321xx : Honestly yeah I think you should go for it, worst case scenario if you do is that might lead to a slightly awkward situation but I would say it isn't the end of world if it does. I think it would be worse if you didn't do it and then you're left to wonder how it could've gone if you had asked and regretting not doing it.

Also since you mentioned how you read that they are there to work and not make friends it might be wiser to try and catch her while she isn't working if possible but like noah said just try to make sure that you don't mean it in a romantic and only as friends.

It is always to say when it is not you but... hey, what do you got to lose? Nothing ventured, nothing gained? Just make it sound like it is no big deal. like... Hey, would you mind if I buy you coffee after work? Would just be nice to talk without interruptions. Or something to that extent?

And if that don't work, then just say fine, I meant no harm. Smile politely and be like it was no big deal.

The situation never happened to me, but it doesn't look much different from asking a friend from school out. You could talk to her and ask if you go over for coffee (or whatever else if you both had too much ) because you enjoy talking to her. If you want to make sure it wouldn't be seen as a 'green light" on her behalf, try to (discreetly) find out about her so there are no bad surprises for anyone.

You have nothing to lose because if anything, there are other fish in the sea to get friends. I guess you can try to invite her to some sort of event in your city or school to make more interesting and less awkward in your position. It is better to try than to not try.
