Yes, me and bombhuc link have once again partaken in a Super Smash Bros 4 tournament.

But before I begin, I would like to thank our host, at, Big City Gaming. For taking the time to host this glorious competition. I really appreciate the time to come together with other fans and duke it out. I love it.

We're almost ready for our fist match, So, I'll go ahead and post this now.

I'll keep you updated as things go by.

You can view the matches in progress here. Starting With doubles.

Bombchu's team is called "not heroes" XP

http://challonge.com/RtG2_SSBU2v2

Here's the one vs one. You know what names to look for!

http://challonge.com/RtG2_SSBU1v1

And now to fill you in practice.

-- Getting in the game.

Me an bombchu's performance has been good. I've already gotten a few compliments with my Dr. Mario. when taking on a (good) Puff main. I'm already seeing people from the last tournament here. 3 faces I've already recognized.

Also, apparently a patch has been applied which has changed a lot of the character in question. How much, or how little, I'm not sure. But one thing is for sure.

Greninja is different.

Shiek and Sonic have also been altered. Though I have little idea as to how much. (I may find out though.)

My main will likely be. . . Mario, or Dr. Mario. I see Falco being a backup, though probably not Fox, he's too fast and messes me up. (especially when Nervous.)

During the practice round, I survived an 8 player free for all as Falo and Windy hill. Also came reaaaalllly close to beating the same jiggly puff guy I mentions earlier. (He's cool!) Most of my practice matches are coming out with me on top. I defeated Greninja, and pummel an Ike twice.

I'm going to get off for now, but you'll see me in time! Keep watching guys!

Looking through the results, it's a shame you guys lost your first double battle, but there's still the loser's bracket, and you always learn more from losses than anything else. Here's to wishing you two luck in singles!

Gamin'Gal :

Yeah, both matches were a loss. Now were out and into singles.

Oh well, got to keep. . . . enthusiastic. . . .

*sigh*

I really feeling down over this. The people we lost to. . . we won the first battle, but the second fight they beat us, and the third? It was my bro left to finish of King Dedede. He lost. :/

-- Into the. . . . fire?

Each match up has three rounds. You loose to match ups, and you are eliminated. Time to talk about how we lost. . . .

Match 1.

Rival name: Arcrobats.

In all three matches, our opponents used Sheik and Zero suite Samos. *sigh* probably one of the "hightest" rated characters, and two I don't get to fight very much. :/ This is bad. Almost any other character I could handle because I actually have got to fight against them. But now, we had to deal with these two. Let's see how things panned out. . . .

Round 1.

I choose Gannondorf to compliment Dark Toon Link- my bother's pick. I sacrifice KO'd Sheik twice to keep a level playing field. Since Gannondorf, a slow character I'm not as well rounded with vs a Shiek main. . . yeah.

We lost, plain and simple. I can't even remember why. Bomb got after me and told me to use Falco, seeing how I did the best with him against new payers. I took his advice.

Round 2.

This fight was a lot more tense, I could keep that fire going and we even had things even at the end. Falco's arials did service well, though the ground wasn't a great game to play. Toward the end, it was just me vs Zero Suite and Sheik. I actually Ko'd Zero suite and had Sheik on ice for a while. But she got me.

*sigh* Time for match two. . . .

Match 2.

Me and bomb talked about it, and this time we got to face off against some tournament newbies! And well. . . the first round went great! Using the same team as before.

Round 1.

Me and bomb took on a red toon link and a green adult link. Their reaction time was a little off and they played on the ground a lot. At the end, me and bomb were able to team up against their last man. It was great to feel like we weren't like the average player! Round won!

Round 2.

They swaped Toon Link for Kind Dedede. Here's where our problems began. I was able to combo Adult Link in the air a few times, but he was getting used to my movement too much and started getting me with those long, sword swinging neutral. I kept up a good deal of the time and even saved bomb a few times. Me and him don't really practice for teams all that much, but it's still. . . fun?

We lost on account of Dedede's hammer. To many KO's from that gigantuam thing. *sigh* onto the next round. . . .

Round 3.

We had a bit of trouble picking stages. In fact, I doubt we even all knew the rules. Something about banning a stage, and then agreeing on a stage to all play at or there were six stages that could be played on. I don't know, can't remember. Didn't even hear the full story. Anyway, bombchu asked if I wanted to change to Mario or something. And after thinking about it, I did.

Dr. Mario.

Why him? Cause, King Dedede was a big target and the doctor tornado was a great way to keep him busy. Throwing him around in a stun state. It helped a lot I think. Plus the mobility of the pills. Battlefield was our destination. That may not have been a good thing. I was able to toss Link around quite a bit, and it seems that it was a pretty good idea. I Ko'd King Dedede a lot, but it felt like I was doing more than I should have. . . the platforms were killing my brother, and at the end. . . .

We got to team up on Link, who had two stocks left!

Me and bomb were close to 100% damage. Link was at 80% or so. The new guys wanted to do a share stock and asked how to do it. "Press A and Z!" His partner said. "Press A and B!" I corrected so that they could quickly savor their match!

Well. . . maybe I should have shut up.

We finished Link ok, and then me and bomb faced a fresh Kind Dedede.

Well. . . Bombchu hit me with an arrow, forcing me forward just enough to land in Dedede's strike Zone.

. . . . .

I was KO'd. Now it was Bomb vs Dedede. And bomb was at like 60%.

He failed cause the platforms were messing him up. Kind Dedede used an upsmash as Bomb got to close. He didn't sheild long enough.

And with that. . . we're out of doubles!

-- An overview.

While the team matches are not what we'er here for, it's kindof sad to see the way things are turning out. I mean, this is the second tourney it's happened!

However, bomb told me that he's built more for one on one and that's the way he uses Toon Link. Lots of projectiles, and keeping half the screen filled with them. That's how he wins, and working as a team without hitting his ally is a hard thing for him.

Oh well! I guess I better brighten up!

The tournament is fun. I'm not enjoying it as much as the first one, and I wish there were a few more outgoing people here. (That really gave us a good impression the first time.) But there's a small lack of TV's. Really, my big things, as Regulas puts it. "Is to fight better opponents." And practicing against other players is a neat thing! But here they have a total of about four TVs. The last tourney had 6. Ah well, Got to keep on going!

Meh... SSB4 is brutal. You should be amazed to even be accepted IMO. I still can't work out a good routine for myself, so at least you know you're up there.

Singles have begun.

-- Raiding barriers.

Match 1.

My opponent is a teen called Tidus. Before our match began, I asked him what kind of character he used.

He said. "you'll see."

Great I thought. We have a mystic one. . .

Into the character select screen, he place his token on Sheik almost immediately after I placed mine on Falco.

Quaintly, I starred there.

No way I was going to fight Shiek as Falco. Sure, yeah, I find that almost all characters are balanced in this game, but because of my lack of practice, against Shiek, I knew that as Falco I would be destroyed. Combo, combo, combo. And I would be too slow to get out. I need a character who could react quickly.

Fox would be my choice.

Now, Mr. Mcloud is hardly an idea for tournament purposes in my mind. He's to weak regarding his smashes and I have a hard time hitting anyone with them. (I also use a Wii remote, so no C stick smashing, manual smashes only.) But in this case, It seemed to be my best bet. The only other character I would consider would be Mario, but the speed is what I really needed to face Sheik.

The first match, I found my choice to be somewhat rewarding. Shiek's move set I was still getting used to, but I was actually holding my own. Sure I got up to 140%, but I wasn't KO'd! and hey, I actually Destroyed one of his stocks and got him to 80%. . .

Before I lost again.

The second round I began thinking about my options. Every attack he made, I couldn't shield because he would just make another. My only defensive option was spacing, and coming in after the fact. Taking action by memorizing his patterns. I thought about my current character. Was Fox really satisfactory? I hated to see a repeat of Melee in the back of my head. Somehow the only good characters being Fox, Shiek, Jiggly, and two others. I sure hope that this game was balanced and it wouldn't be another repeat.

I had no complaints and couldn't think of a better option. With a small nod toward my opponent, the second match began.

It really was similar to the first match.

Fox was fast and I did a lot of offense and defense switching. My blaster was almost useless. Nearly everytime I fired it I wish I had done something else and was punished nearly every time. (I wasn't just spamming the B button either. Three shots at a time were the most I'd make.) I found my neutrals to be of some use. And the speed was really helping me from being less than toast.

You see, even though I was getting thrown around a lot, I could fight back and combo to a decent degree, nearly Koing her with my up airs three times.

Even though I got fairly high above 100% I started to come back, and brought my opponent to the said number. Then It occured to me.

Shiek was just having way to hard Ko'ing me. I mean, I don't know how good or bad her smashes are, but I do know that Fox is heavy, and that Sheik is fast. (Fast characters have pretty weak KO's) My spacing made it even more difficult. And there was a fair chance of me winning at the end.

Swordlegion: 142%

Sheik: 112%

I lost thanks to that weird, jumping move Sheik does. The same one she had used about 3 times earlier to come up off a ledge. With that, I was done. Moving on into the loser's bracket. My opponent offered his hand to shake and told me "good game." I know that it's the polite thing to offer such things, and I actually won't tell every person I fight "Good game." Unless they did well, or gave me close to an eaqual fight. Otherwise the phrase. "Good game." Is nothing short of a lie in my opinion.

But I got him above 100% on his second stock. That made me feel proud. I knew he wasn't saying that without reason.

I also know that I'll be buying a Sheik Amiibo

Maybe. . . .

Match 2.

THis was a bit easier. It was me vs a boy named Jason. He looked about 14. As of the first round He picked Fox. Thinking about it carefully, and what elements I wanted in my favor to go against him.

I choose Falco. The battle went my way perfectly. He gave me a fight, but I took out his second stock with a realeatively low percentage of 40 on my self.

The second round he picked Little Mac. Thinking about how my projectiles would only minorly deter the opponent, and how I could get comboed all over the place again. I decided to swap to Fox.

Little mac punished me quite a bit and I just couldn't control the match. We went to Little Mac's home stadium, and I was two stocked.

I can't really say what went wrong with the match other than I seem to suck at being aggressive. Like, against anyone. I always see things going wrong so I move to a regressive assaulting state, and only play offense to surprise and mix things up. And, well, Smash Four is a lot more regressive than offensive actually. Not like Project M. In the future, I may be more aggressive on the never giving up fighter. See if I can toss him around a lot more . . .

Round 3 was a breeze. I beat him as Mario, and for some reason, I can't remember anything beyond that. Maybe later? I think he was using. . . Fox?

After the fact I told him I was impressed by his skill for his age. (I think he was about 14.) He did two stock me after all. I told him this was my second tournament. Not sure if he told me this was his first or not. He spoke a little to quietly and it was hard to hear him a lot.

Match. 3

I looked at the challonge brackets to see who my next opponent could be. It was a guy I already knew. Omen.

Now, Omen, I had been watching through this tournament. He had been doing a great job as well. I saw him drop into the loser's bracket just now. And he played a great Link, and Game and Watch. (I knew because of his ability to mirror match other Links and win. As well as from facing his Game and Watch. I think. . . ) He was pretty high up there, but to not go up against Sheik or Zero Suite again?

Great.

This guy is pretty good though still. . .

The first round. . . was a lot of fun, the guy was friendly, lighthearted, explained that he was going to Washington for another tournament over there. He choose Mario and said he wanted to test out all his characters before going there. I could understand. Made a lot of sense to me.

He choose Mario and I was going to go for Falco. Decided to try Mario instead.

We battled it out well, and I got two stocked. Wasn't my cup of tea, but it was fun. The next round I choose Falco, and it was a big improvement. My gun was coming in really handy, and I got pretty far ahead, Koing him and putting myself at 40%. I dealt him 40% more damage before he finally finished my first stock. Then he got me up to 50% with a new, really annoying combo in which Mario Grabs, and uses and up tilt again and again and again and again.

I got him back a little bit before he Ko'd me for reasons I cannot remember.

Eliminated form my second tournament. We had a lot of fun talking to one another though. Even during the fight. He asked for my name, and I gave it too him. I thanked him for his attitude and overall kindness. He was a really nice guy.

And with that, I'm out once again. Definitely learning, but one thing I really wish I had was more opportunities to play this against new people. Also, I really should be using GC controller. I tried it a bit back at home. Having the C-stick to smash really makes a difference.

A lot of difference. Though pressing B is not as smooth. . .

Though pressing B is not as smooth. . .

Mecha Leo : Think SSB4 is brutal? Try playing Melee competitively. Even the worst competitive players will rek u hard.

Sword legion : Awesome. Why didn't I get a summon though, I thought it was well known I'm hugely into the smash bros tournament scene. Did you just enter smash 4? Was it streamed? Also... who's better, you or bombchu? They're do friendlies every Thursday at a store near me, but they're getting ready to do actual brackets/tournaments for Melee, Project M, and Smash 4. I'm pretty excited.

You had a fun time though, right? As long as you learned from what you have done, I'm sure you can practice yourself and make a stronger attempt next time and maybe next time you could end up doing so much better. We're going to be rooting for both of you next time something like this happens.

Well, it stinks that you got eliminated  so quickly. All you can really do is learn from the mistakes you made and try again at another event. You're lucky that you get to go to those events though. With life and work, I'll never have time to go to a tournament like that...

I just now found this. Sorry to see you were eliminated, but you are getting better each time. Keep on trying, man. Thanks for the summon! I always enjoy reading these. Think you'll try again?

Glad you enjoy the detail though! NO, really, I'd hate putting all that text down if it didn't mean anything to anyone. So, thanks for telling me!

zanderlex :

Thanks for the support. And the likes, no, really. Since you actually LIKED my posts that I took time into making, describing the matches, I appreciate it.

TheFadedWarrior :

Sure! I'd love to have you summoned when I go to these! I've only gone to a few tournaments. Two to be exact. Bombchu got to quarter finals last time. This time, he won two matches, and I only won one. IT's hard to say who's better because I whoop him all the time at home, but he's been doing better at the tournaments. I would like to be on a streamed Tourney. Would probably be better for getting advice from people though. You been to many smash 4 tournaments yet?

Mecha Leo :

Actually, there were a few nice people there! The first tournament was better though! And yeah, it is cool holding your own as Fox against a good Sheik player. You not have such good luck your first try?

Sword legion : Nah, I haven't. I don't play Smash 4 much, mainly because I only have it on 3DS and my circle pad is somewhat broken. If I just quickly tap up or down on it, it "sticks" in a way and the 3DS itself thinks that I'm still holding up or down for another 5 or so seconds. It's brutal with some characters, and causes a LOT of SD's because it does down-b instead of up-b for a recovery. I would send it in to get fixed, but Nintendo says that it should take about 30 days before they send it back to you.

Another reason I don't enter Smash 4 tournaments is because I prefer Project M for now. If I actually owned a Wii U (not just playing Wii U on occasion at tournaments), I would play Smash 4 a lot. So for now, since I have the original 3DS with the low battery life, small screen, lag and connection problems online, broken circle pad that is small-ish and has bad grip in the first place, I prefer to play Project M on a big tv opposed to that tiny 3DS screen.

That was a really descriptive summary of your tournament. Therefore, I will do my best to return the favor in sharing my thoughts.

I don't have a lot of experience with Sheik myself to be honest, if I'm not mistaken she is a top tier character. You made a good call in going for a speedy character though. If it were me, I would probably try to use sonic against her because of the minimum lag most of his moves have, even though I am not that skilled with him.

In this situation, most of the characters I main wouldn't work against her, Ike would be too slow, Ganondorf wouldn't even be an option, and I don't think Shulk would stand that much of a chance either, even with his speed monado art (mainly because his moves have a lot of lag, not to mention his recovery isn't that great).

I think I could pull it off with Link though and keep her at a distance by utilizing my projectiles. Nice job on your other matches though. Maybe one day I'll enter a tournament and test my luck.

Thanks for the detail you put into describing your matches, be sure to keep us posted!

I didn't post here during the competition, but I spent the day watching the bracket site you linked to keep up with your progress. It's awesome to hear that you're participating in competitions like this, and that you intend to continue doing so!

Do you know when the next competition will be? This is the second one you've participated in, correct? What's your favorite part of the competitions?

TheFadedWarrior :

Yeah, can't really smash on a bad controller. :/ Project M is a lot, lot, lot of fun though. Been playing it just so I can compete in the competitions as they come up. Pretty Balanced, I think that Project M may be the best way to smash. It's a shame it's not given as much attention simply because it's not official.

I'm in another tournament later today. Expect a Summon.

Razor-987 :

Thank you.

Sonic is a character I've played around with, and even had decent success with. He's fun, but reallllly different. I use him a lot differently.

Sheik, I think is top Tier. The thing I hate about Fox is it's hard for me to smash with him. It's like you have to use a dash attack to get them in the air, and then us and Upair just to finish them.

Thank you for your post though. I enjoy detailed conversations.

mrfe :

My favorite part was serving this one guy as Falco, cause he was one of the best players there. But he caught up all to quickly after the fact, and I lost. Also like how well I did as Fox against Sheik. Though I didn't win any of them.

Thanks for keeping in check, and I appreciate your support.

Sword legion : Yeah, the best part about Project M is the fact that every character is balanced. I used to main Game & Watch in Melee and Lucas in Brawl, but then I got more competitive and noticed that, although they have lots of potential, the game's unbalance really just makes them crap in tournaments. Whereas in Project M, it depends more on skill than which character you pick. Everyone is on the same tier except for Olimar and possibly Ice Climbers.

Good luck with your tournament! go rek sum skrubs.
