I wouldn't say that I am an expert at drawing anymore. I used to be somewhat decent but I can tell you that a great way to improve is to watch tutorials on youtube, not because they are super helpful but because you want to be exposed to the style a little more and you want to learn the tips or tricks. But the main way to learning or improving at drawing will be to practice practice and practice even more. Trust me, even if you feel very unsatisfied with your drawing you have to finish your drawing in order to see how it turns out, I would also save the drawings sometimes its encouraging to see the difference of when you started drawing versus your current drawin skills. I watch and read a lot of anime and manga so I try to learn many styles (mostly from manga) about how to draw characters, looking at images of drawings is especially helpful when you lack the image on your mind of how to draw people at a certain angle, when I find a good picture that I feel has a very neat drawing style I usually save the picture or the link and later I analyze the details to absorb them into my mind.

Also try to go step by step, if you are barely trying to draw parts don't expect to be able to draw a full body drawing from night to day, also don't expect to be able to shade like a pro, draw the hands, or the eyes if you can't it takes time, trust me I am also learning those three things (still) even though I have over 3 years I started drawing. I recommend using a normal pencil or a drawing pencil and not a mechanical pencil. An eraser and a good sharpener. Don't forget to enjoy drawing and don't do it just for the purpose of knowing how to do it, your drawings come out better if you enjoy them.

I'm going to move this to the art forum, it's based on art advice so it seems like it belongs there.

If you disagree with me I'll keep an open mind.

Lighto : Not sure how I forgot this, but really practice makes perfect. Keep at it and you'll get the hang of drawing whatever it is your mind imagines. Best of luck.

Collapz3 is spot on with the advice he gave. Practice, watch people draw styles you like either through video tutorials or their streams (if they have them), and most importantly do it because you want to! You need to practice lots and start with the things you feel comfortable with.

Not everyone is good at drawing everything, especially right away so start with what you know. Do you have a cat or a dog? Try drawing it when it's asleep. Is there a lot of books in you house? Stack them or put them on a shelf and try drawing them. Or maybe you love a particular character from a TV show, manga, video game, web-comic etc. Try drawing them, or if they have a complicated design just thier head. Heck, even leave out the pesky details like feathers, hair, and complicated clothing until you feel confident about your version of that character.

If drawing starts to feel like a chore though, take a break! Creative burnout isn't fun, and having a hand cramp is uncomfortable. If you try digital art, make sure to take a break from the screen every once in a while. I've had headaches and sore eyes caused by my monitor and their not fun either.

My biggest suggestion would to experience the world around you if you want to become good at realistic artwork. However, if your looking into a more cartoon like feel I would suggest you watch cartoons! When you look at other artwork it really changes your perspective on your own. I often look at my cats, dogs and animals in the house, as well as go to places and sketch quickly. But it's more important t realize what shapes your drawing.

Perspective is always one of the hardest things to get a hold of. Almost as hard as drawing hands. Perspective doesn't always have to be realistic, as much as how you want it to be looked at. Get the hang of perspective though, and you have a whole new island of drawing skills to master.

I suppose, find your style of artwork, and don't let anyone tell you it's bad. Take critiques seriously with thought rather then whining about how mean it was, as the person is just trying to help. You can turn these in to helpful tips that will help your artwork. Show your art to people. The more people can help. Of coarse I have my works that I show no one, but it's good to get a point of view from others.

Lighto : Hey buddy, you could have done that all in one post, and it's sorta against the rules to post more than once in a row. I'll let it slide this time but next time it happens you might get in trouble with the staff man.

It depends on what you want to be the focal point of your art. If you want to be good at drawing objects and surroundings, then my suggestion would be to always have a drawing pad with you at all times, that way you always have it handy in case you get new found inspiration. You wouldn't believe how much material for drawing you have in your daily life, so it would probably be best to start with simple everyday items, or even pets if you have any. Watching other people draw on youtube, is a good place to start because it can help you get the fundamental understanding of drawing which you can then build off of.

You should always try to make it fun as well, drawing should be a light hearted activity that you enjoy doing, if it at any point becomes stressful or boring, then by all means take a break and come back later, good artwork takes time.

It all comes down to what you are into, if you want to draw cartoons and anime, then you are already off to a good start since you said you watch a lot of it. Try to find your own unique style and then go from there, if that means tracing or starting with something small, then by all means start from there and you will continue to progress with practice.

And as always, keep drawing, because the more you do it, the more natural it will come to you. Good luck!

I'm not the best at giving advice, but I'll share what I've done over the year's to improve.

Definitely try to find your style. I love comics and always wished I could draw in that style, but I just can't. Eventually, I discovered that I excel at doing realistic portraits. I find I produce a better piece when I don't try to force it and I'm having fun and I'm not frustrated. My icon is a portrait I drew of Taylor Swift. I just find drawing that stuff a lot more fun and easy than drawing cartoons.

Take your time when you draw. I always like to get the lines done first (softly so mistakes are easier to erase), with no details. That way I can make sure everything is lined up properly and things are where they should be. A good, kinda weird tip to make sure things look right, is to look at the drawing upside down. I heard that a few years back and I don't know why, but looking at a drawing like that for some reason makes spotting flaws really easy. Also, when you go in to add details, start off lightly. Shading and whatnot can always be added to, but if you start out too dark and mess up, sometimes, you can't erase it.

Try to start with something a bit easier if you can. Really hone what you can do, then start challenging yourself. I've drawn stuff now, that a year ago, I never would have attempted. It's always fun to keep pushing yourself and see how much you've improved.

You could also check out some tutorials. And remember that what works for some people, may not work for you. Drawing take's a lot of trial and error and practice. Just keep on doing it and you'll get better.

There's really not much left to be said that hasn't already been stated. Practice is the key, and it always will be. Even if/when you become professional, it'll still be your biggest help.

I've found personally that the best way to get into doing comics or anything like that would be to work more on drawing realistically, even if your style is extremely exaggerated. You need to work on anatomy and proportioning, and once you're comfortable with that you can then work on stretching it and changing it into your own style.

Repetition in practice is also key. Having trouble with hands? Set aside an hour a day and do nothing but draw hands. Repeat this process for anything else that's barring you from continuing. Shading. Inking. Crosshatching, whatever. Do it, then do it again, then do it again and just to make sure, do it again.

Here's a little snippet of a piece I've been procrastinating on, so you know what level the dude giving you advice is on: http://i.imgur.com/cFfnCEv.png

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
