Recently, I got a new bible. My church was handing some out.

Why you should care?

It's so much better then my old one. My old one was completely falling apart and it got hard to read it. Because I this, I only read it every few days, but with this new one, it's so much easier to read.

It's just a holy bible with the apocrypha.

That's very nice! I'm trying to figure out by your description the version for it, but I know quite a bit of Bible versions have the apocrypha along with it.

Barathemos :  Thanks for summoning me.  It's always great to get a new Bible, but just a few notes / comments about the Apocrypha.

The Apocrypha were written primarily in the time between the Old and New Testaments.  This was in the time when God did not speak to the nation of Israel for 300 years (p4f correct me if I'm wrong here).  So it was kind of a state of "spiritual silence" if you will.  The nation of Israel did treat the Apocrypha books with respect, but they never accepted them as true books of the Hebrew Bible.  I personally have not read the books of the Apocrypha, but  the New Testament quotes regularly from the Old Testament, but apparently nowhere quotes to any of the Apocrypha books.  I've also read that there are many proven errors and contradictions in the Apocrypha and that it teaches many things that are not true and are not historically accurate.  The Apocrypha supports for example, praying to the dead, petitioning "saints" in Heaven for their prayers, worshipping angels and giving of alms to atone for your sins.  All of this is not in agreement with what the Bible teaches.  Due to the historical and theological errors the Apocrypha have, it must be viewed as fallible historical and religious documents and not as the inspired, authoritative Word of God.

Like I said, I haven't read the Apocrypha, so I cannot personally testify of all the contradictions, but the above has been thoroughly researched and proven.  So it's maybe good that you have both the Bible and the Apocrypha so that you can check it out for yourself.

I know how nice it is to have a new Bible, after the one you had was falling apart. That's great!

Like Sol@R, I don't think the Apocrypha is actually part of the accepted Bible. It's a good History book, but it does have contradictory things... But that's a little off topic.

I'm glad that you have a new Bible, hope you enjoy it! Maybe you could make a thread discussing what you read on the Apocrypha?
