I know, right? I think Nintendo put so many coins in each level because they added a coin counter to the game, and in the game's trailer, the announcer said "Can you get to 1 million coins?" or something like that. They didn't want to make it too hard to reach 1,000,000 coins.

Basically New Super Mario Bros. 2 main focus is on coins because prior to New Super Mario Bros. 2, the only thing people really cares about coins is if they get 100 coins, they get an extra life and add onto your score, but other than that, that's it.. But that's why Nintendo done a whole lot more with coins on this game and have coins have it's own score counter to see on how many coins you gained over the whole game.

I think the coin collecting was just fine how it was, a game centered all around collecting coins sounds excessive. Also, if you're going to make a game about coin collecting, make it about Wario. Jeez.

New Super Mario Bros 2., a unique Mario game, and for the first time in the series, they focus on coins more. Like Pac said, they added many coins on each level so for the goal to achieve 1 000 000 coins won't be that hard. Also, the Golden Flower will make the quest easier, as it transforms every enemies and objects into coins.

There are a lot of coins in New Super Mario Bros. 2. I got a limited edition 3DS version of the game, and I swear I have died at least 20 or 30 times. Somehow, I still have about 22 or 23 lives right now. It's crazy. 100 coins equals 1 life... So many darn coins.
