Local Mods : I honestly had no idea where this would go, so I just thought general chat. If you want to move it, go ahead .

So I've always had problems with headphones. Whether it's normal headphones, cheap headphones, expensive headphones, earbuds, or whatever, I've always broken them easily. And as I get older, it seems to get worse. Nobody else in my family seems to have these problems, and it always happens to me! The first time I broke a pair of headphones was a couple years ago, when I broke a pair after 6 months of usage. Then when I got another pair, they broke in 6 months, too. Soon the headphones started breaking in 4 months, then even shorter. A year or two ago, I got a cool looking, expensive looking pair of headphones for my birthday. Guess how long they lasted? 2 weeks. Since my recent birthday, I've been using my sister's and brother's headphones. I broke those too! . And I got another pair of headphones for my recent birthday, which also broke within 2 weeks! By the way, as I'm typing this right now, I saw an unused pair of headphones (although they were a really cheap kind), and I've been using them for the past 3 to 4 days. Now they are ALREADY starting to sound off!!!!!!!! UGH. Before the headphones would break whereas one or two of the speakers wouldn't play sound. Those ones would still be usable. For a while, if I was able to bend the cord a certain way, I was able to get them both to work, but eventually it would become more impossible.
Now, they just break where only the treble or bass plays. It would be like watching a youtube video, and hear the backround noise instead of the person talking. Same as before, I could sometimes bend the cord a certain way to get them to work, but it would get more impossible as the days go on. It's the same case with earbuds, but usually those go by faster. I think I've broken approximately 6 or 7 pairs of headphones and earbuds . What am I doing wrong? Do you guys have the same problem as me? I usually take average to good care of them, untangling them if it gets too tangled, not tossing them around, and other things, but I can get a little bit reckless at times. Please help, because my mom is getting really angry at me for this, and my siblings won't let me ever use their headphones out of fear that I will break them . Do you guys know any types of headphones that don't break easily?

tl;dr: I break headphones a lot in a short amount of time. How do I take better care of them and stop them from breaking? Also, what are some kinds of tough, hard-to-break headphones?

Popeye116 : Gawd yes, I once had this awesome pair of headphones that wrap around the ears and I had them foreve until I lost them during the summer, and ever since then I had gone through maybe 8 different pairs because they all break, and they all break in the same way, one side just stops working, and it's always the right side. I bought one pair in September, lasted a week, got a free pair in the last week of September which broke a few weeks later, was given a new pair in november which broke before the month ended.

I had the same problem. It was because I never stored them very well. If you haven't already done so, try to find a good bag/box/container to store your headphones in. Ever since I've started doing that, I haven't been breaking my headphones so easily.

I too am prone to destroy headsets, if not everything. So, when you tug at the cords it ruins the headset. Plug them in when your PC, after it has loaded itself fully. Then, unplug them when your computer is turned off completely. Make sure to not bend any of the cords when wrapping them. Leave a little bit of length at the beginning (where it connects to the headphones). Welp, that's all I know.

You just have to be
extra careful with them. My last headphones lasted for a long time, up until I accidentally tripped on the cord. I'm surprised I haven't broken my laptop, yet. Hope this helps you out!

My headsets used to rarely last past a month. These days, I find two things help preserve them at least somewhat better.
The first thing is what Kuti said. Don't yank the cords or stretch them out too suddenly. That tends to disrupt the connection and lead to messed up audio fairly quickly.
Another thing is volume. How loud is your audio whenever you go on the computer? If the headphones are forced to go full blast more than once or twice they tend to be ruined within a week. The loud volume basically blows out the right earpiece especially often. I'd suggest keeping the audio hovering closer to 60-70%. Or, if you listen to youtube, just keep your computer on full but the youtube audio low. It helps.

Hmm, it seems that I'm one of the few that doesn't have this problem... My headset for my computer (turtle beach) has lasted literally over 2 years and it works perfect without and problems at all, including the variable bass levels and stuff. Personally, I don't like to wear headphones in public so I prefer earbuds (plus they are more comfortable for me), and now that I think about it, I really "abuse" my earbuds . Yet they are still perfectly fine also for almost a year. Of course I have broken a few pairs of earbuds though.

I've gone through at least 10 pairs of earbuds in the last 5 years or so, they all lost sound in one of the channels. This is most likely due to the plug getting bent a lot. I finally said "screw it" and bought my first pair of actual headphones. I did indeed shell out $90, but I've had them for about a month and I can say they're worth every penny. They're built well, have a thick cable, sound phenomenal, and the connector is completely metal. The headphones in question are the Sony MDR-V6's. The same model has been continually produced since the mid 1980's, so they're known to be long lasting. It also comes with a nice leatherette bag.

You can get them on Amazon

Since these are the first headphones I've bought, I can't recommend any cheaper alternatives. But the bottom line is that you'll get what you pay for.

The last time I bought headphones was last year and I got those 7 buck gummy ones. A Red and a purple one to be exact. Both has went through the washer and dryer and both still work. I bought a sport non slip one before and it slipped after an hour of sweating. Screw that. The cheap ones are not as loud but they last just as long, sounds pretty decent, and do not cost a bundle. I actually use headphones in a few situations (such as gaming or if I am working out at the gym). If I can, I always rather blast my s*** on the speakers. I prefer my surround sound during the day and even at night I just lower the volume on my speakers and ditch the headphones lol. I just never thought it was cool to have these lightweight but bulky things on my head. Makes me feel like an anime character; you know like how each character has their own personality and clothing type blah blah and I am the one with a huge headphone on my head. I don't want that haha. 200 bucks for a new dre beats? Count me out. I rather spend a 150 bucks on a solar powered bluetooth nfc enabled weather resistant speaker that I can take anywhere. And it better have charging ports. Yes those do exist, they are great for camping and hiking and they are cheaper than high end headphones. I saw one at Walmart for 89 bucks before.

I just shopped around for a set that fit me and my ears nicely until I found the right one. That set turned out to be $20 Skull Candy ear buds. And they have some nice bass in them for $20 ear buds. The only time I ever have to replace them is when I lose them, and I do tend to misplace things a little too often.
