I was watching an interesting John Oliver topic about corporations being on twitter. A good point was made as to if they should be on there.

If they want to promote their items that's fine but it may not be the best idea for them to go in on the trends. For example a nice tweet was made about 9/11 however it's a bit weird when the tweet was made by none other than...Fleshlight (one of the leading sex toys for males).

Then there was the whole Casey Anthony issue going around and everyone was trying to support her with "#notguilty" trending. However one of the corporations on there felt it was a good idea to use the tweet like this.

Would you say that it's a good idea for them to be on twitter?

I see no problem in them being there as long as they stay out of all the other stuff that's going on and just use it to promote their business.

Corporations put their foot in it all the time. Whether its on twitter or tv doesent really matter.
They aren't breaking any rules or laws so really, if they want to say that all blacks ahve no souls and are the source of crime I wouldnt care.
Because the consumer will punish them and thats really all the karma you need.
Of the two examples you gave, only the 2nd one is actually bad. The product or company making the message isnt really important.
The first was a message about 911. They werent offering discounts, or putting in any puns. Its normal people that work in the company, same as anyone else, and they felt 911 was a tragedy, as most others do.
The 2nd is making a joke out of what many people saw as a tragedy, thats really not OK. I wouldn't stop them from doing it, hopefully the consumer will show them the error of their ways.

Its like any other free speech. You can argue people shouldn't be able to say things like, the Jews should all be killed, but at least when you hear it, you now know the kind of people they are.
I think their was a mini golf course that was offering discounts on 9/11. That too was pretty bad, as they were just trying to cash in on people emotions.

At the end of the day, its much like tv. if you dont like it, dont look.
Ben and Jerry's ice cream came out against the right to gay marriage. I unreservedly thought they were wrong to try to effect peoples opinions like that. I thought they were totally wrong. I didnt write a complaint though. Realistically I'd thank them, they effectively told me never buy our products, because we oppose freedom of choice, while using our freedom of expression, in direct relation to our freedom of religion.

If company's are stupid enough to shoot themselves in the foot, let them. If they make smart adverts that appeal to people, let them.

Blubcreator :

It's gross to see a company like that associating itself with 9/11. I already hate Twitter for all its. #copythisifyouwannabecoolandsupportcrap stuffs.

I mean, come on.

You copy those hashtags, and you're already a hero.

Ideas are won by logical pursuit, not following the cool train to happiness, that's what's got a lot of this generation ruined. People must really impressionable to get involved in that, but that's why companies are doing it.

It's the cool think of today that they're associating with, just like major companies coming out and announcing which side they are on, (picking the more popular one) to boost sales.

The thing is though, like all fads, people don't see how stupid they are till 20 years later.

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

I think that if they want to post on Twitter, and Twitter wants them posting, then there's really nothing we can or should do about it. Now if they say something stupid? They have every right to. But it's their responsibility to deal with the social consequences of whatever they say.

I agree with you. If a corporation is on a social media site, then they need to stick to their bounds and only talk about what related to their company.

Sure, if you want to show support like Fleshlight did, that is fine is all, but it is pretty strange with a sex toy company talks a 13 year old terrorist attack. I'll give you that one.
