Haven't seen that many good films recently, just wanted to know some of your personal favorites or some cult classics that I have failed to find. 

Genres that I like are: Comedy, action, mystery and thriller

As for movies that came out this year, I would suggest watching Edge of Tomorrow and Non Stop. I would also suggest Prisoners, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Skyfall.

I personally love all of these movies and I think they are all great in their own way.

Proxelmo : My favorite movie is Forrest Gump. If you haven't already seen it I think you should it's got an amazing story and there's plenty of funny moments in it as well. It's a true masterpiece.

Are you looking for recent movies or does it matter?  As zander mentioned (and the only one I'm familiar with) Edge of Tomorrow was absolutely great.  I've seen it three or four times, and it was just as good each time.  I'm not someone to watch movies over and over again in such a short time period, but my husband wanted to share it with family members and for once, I didn't mind watching it over again with them.  I would recommend it as well. It's an action flick and has its humorous moments.

Rat Race is a good comedy but it is a little dated due to how long its been around. It was one of the first movie line-ups to have all the best comedians[For the most part.] at the time under one roof. The idea and premise is unique to a certain extent with a Rat Race for the money being offered. It's a little slow at the start, building up to the eventual race but after that, it really picks up. Its definitely worth a look at, and still one of my favorite comedies.

Divergent, Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Dark Knight Trilogy. 

Maybe you have already seen those, but they are good! Also, Avengers, Thor, and most any Superhero movie. 

All of them, except for Divergent and the Hunger Games have many funny moments, but they are all action movies.

Proxelmo : Comedy, eh? My best suggestion here is Home Alone and its sequel. Both of these movies will make you laugh hard. 'Family comdey without the family'. Especially the part where the Bandits will fall on Kevin's traps :3

Lets see here...I'll try and think of some really good movies for each of the genres you mentioned.

Comedy: Dumb and Dumber ( the first one ) - I know some people will find this literally "stupid" but every once in a while, I like to enjoy a stupid comedy movie.

Action: The Matrix ( any of them, preferably the first one ) - my favorite movie series of all time, by far. You don't have a pulse if you didn't enjoy EACH of these pictures.

Mystery: Inception - I have to go with this movie here. I don't like Leonardo DiCaprio very much ( and my wife doesn't either XD ) but he definitely did a great job putting this one together.

Thriller: Equilibrium - this is a very interesting movie. Its also my favorite movie with Christian Bale in it.

Just keep in mind, these are all good movies in my opinion. All of them are really good ones!
