HEYA GUYS! Its time to talk about my favorite month of the year. And you know what..? Well,as phoenix from ultimate marvel 3 would say- "I can't control it!" *Explodes* YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! IT"S HALLOWEEN.WOOHOO! The month of Ghost, ghouls, goblins, demons, devils, fiends, beast, vampires, and everything else you can possibly think of,that sends a chill down your spine. For those who don't know,i love October. Its my favorite month of the year.Dressing up in my Ryuk costume.Gettting all the candy set up.Just waiting for that door bell to ring, and hearing "Trick or treat!" Its pure ecstasy! I love it...But,that's not the only thing i do on the good ole month of horror. I LOVE horror manga,so much. But i have a silly rule for myself.I only read them, during the month of October.During the rest of the year, the horrors lie in a longbox, that is locked away in my basement.Never to see the light of day, unless it is during the month of October. The Manga that rest in the Longbox include- Uzumaki High School Of The Dead (Barely...) Tokyo Ghoul (Just got added to the list this year XD) Highurashi When They Cry. Hellsing XXX Holic HideOut Tomie The Fashion Model Jisatsu Circle Ibitsu Zashiki Ona Bookclub Drifting Classroom Gyo Hell Girl (I dislike it,but whatever, its tradition...) Puppa And alot more.Just a reminder i only read this during October.Due to the amount of stuff the Longbox possess,it makes me read about..Say 300-500 Volumes of manga, within the course of 31 days.(Its alot easier than you think, you get used to the imagery after about 2 series.) And sadly..This is the last day of October, just 4 more volumes left, then they go away for another year. Also, this may just be me,but some weird stuff happens when i read those volumes during October.I hear voices, see shadows, have weird dreams...PFFT! Don't worry,i'm just joking with you. (Or am i...?) But enough about that, what is the point of this thread? Simple.I have completely accepted the concept of horror in Manga. And i believe it works wonderfully. (Uzumaki made me afraid of spirals..) However,i have always asked myself the question- Horror in Anime, can it work? Ah discussion time, nothing is sweeter than discussing things with people.Or no one will reply to the thread, which basically means that i have been talking to myself all this time. But regarding the question.Well..That's a very hard question to answer. First of all,you need to account for the fact that nearly anything can count as horror,in Anime.Blue Exorcist is technically considered Horror.D.Gray Man is technically considered horror.Even Blood lad, freaking Blood Lad,is technically considered Horror. Then there is the big aspect of Anime being animated, which makes it hard to make the horror, and gore seem believable, and induce fear in viewer.Be aware, this is not just something that happens in the Anime Horror genre, this is something that happens to all anime in general. The disbelief of a situation, caused by animation.I remember when i was a teenager, and let my mom watch 3 episodes of Cowboy Bebop. Her response was always "This is good, but if it works in animation, why don't you just put it in live action?" And i believe i speak for most of us,when we say that Anime is its own medium, with its own rules.Alot of things that work in animation, will not work in live action. (That's just ONE of the reasons the dragon ball evolution film sucks..One) Try putting Blue exorcist in live action..It won't work.Try putting D.Gray Man in live action,it won't work.Try putting Code Geass in live action,it won't...Well now that i think about it,i don't think it would do to..That's another discussion for another time. Anime has proven time, and time again, that it can tell a mature story. But i still cannot think of one good horror anime. Not one.Higurashi does not count because 1: I don't think Higurashi is scary, alright? I just think of it as a very good mystery show. But,horror is a genre that is reliant on imagery, and shock factor. (At least in these days..) Anime does have the power to do this.In fact,i would say thats where we specialize.Since you know,we are a medium THAT PRIDES OURSELVES ON ANIMATION.And we can pull some pretty good stuff. The lovely bloodbath of Hellsing Ultimate. The shocking deaths of Higurashi. And plenty more.So what else is stopping Anime from embracing Horror? You could perhaps put up the argument that studio producers don't want to take a risk on an unfamiliar genre.Which is why we see 40% of new anime catering to Moe Blob Otakus.. NO NO NO! Not you K-On.You're my tresure. Moving on.Lets assume the answer to this question is this. "Horror in Anime cannot work, because in most of the american audiences eyes, any form of animation is reduced to a children's cartoon,or an adult comedy." And this is true for most of the mainstream audience,in the west. However, that's not to say you can't change someones opinion.Imagine if 3 episodes of Hellsing Ultimate were shown in theaters in America.Or the first 2 episodes of Fate/Zero.No,even better.Imagine if HBO picked up Fate/Zero,and actually played it at a reasonable hour. That would become mainstream,SO quickly. Why is that? Quite simple. Imagine that HBO is a friend,a friend who tells you if a show is worth checking out,or not.If the show airs on HBO,the show is worth checking out.If it isn't,it does not air on HBO.Its the classic trick of using a familiar personality,to help introduce you to an unfamiliar medium.Like your mother gently pushing you when learning how to use a bike, then finally letting you go. However, there is still a flaw at hand. That scenario i conjured only makes people accept anime..I didn't say it makes people agree that horror in anime can work.In the end..I think this is the few times in these discussions, that i have accomplished nothing. All i did was keep asking myself the question. But,i guess thats why i have you guys around. So to end this i would like to ask you-The reader a question: Do you think Horror can work in Anime. And if so,why don't you explain why? And if you could, please give me an example. Other than that.I gotta get ready to scare the crap out of some kids.See yah next time. *waves* Jeez,Nice costume! That looks so real! And that Death Note looks awesome! Wait..What are you writing in the notebook..? Image upload: 382x338 totaling 30 KB's. HEYA GUYS! Its time to talk about my favorite month of the year. And you know what..? I've seen horror in an anime once. Wasn't my wisest decision, since I watched it past my bedtime. It's actually a video game as well, not joking. The anime is called "Corpse Party." I won't tell you anything else, cause it'll be spoilers, so. . . . You have been warned, my friend. Been warned. Here, have a meme while your at it: Here, have a meme while your at it: |

Horror actually works better in anime than in other mediums because there is more you can do with it in an animated format than in a live action form. Satoshi Kon said that if given the chance to direct live action films you would not do it because in animation you can make things happen faster than the brain can follow, but not too fast for the eye to see. Because of the ways you can cut and edit in anime you can do things that are nearly impossible in other styles of film with how you convey the story to the viewer. If you know any live action film that does what "Perfect Blue" (1997) did, and managed to do it well please tell me because I would love to see other psychological horror films of that quality.
