Who is the best reggae artist of all time?

You don't have to nominate one, there may be several. But you must name their memorable songs as to why you like them as the best.

I can't remember all of the best reggae's. I do know some of them, but forgot their names. I'll have to say bob marly for me, I love his songs. My favorite ones are iron lion zion. woman no cry, everything is going to be alright. I have others but I'll only name these three. Maybe later on I'll edit my post to say more of this. ^-^

    I'm not a huge reggae fan, but Bob Marley seems a safe choice. His 1980 album "Uprising" is a masterpiece from start to finish. The opening track "Coming in from the Cold" sets the tune for an excellent listening experience. Thoughtful lyrics delivered from the soul backed by masterful reggae tunes and beats roll your emotions until the closing "Redemption Song" provides the perfect end to your journey in the world seen through Bob's eyes. It's very difficult to highlight any one song off of the album.  I would recommend any.

Hmmm...I like Ska more than Reggae, but there are certainly a lot of gems to choose from.  I'm going to have to say...

Jimmy Cliff "The Harder They Come" and "You Can Get it if You Really Want."  This guy is awesome.  These are both featured in a movie called The Harder They Come along with some other things I have listed here.  If you like Reggae, check out this movie-you will be in love.  Also, if you're into the whole Rastafarian thing, check out the movie Rockers.  It's not as rich musically, but still a cool movie if you like that whole Rasta thing.
  
Toots & the Maytals "Pressure Drop" and "54-46 (Was My Number)" (technically they're considered Ska, but really the rhythm is a lot more Reggae with these songs in my opinion.)  

Haha, I've got to include Inner Circle "Bad Boys."  Pretty cliché, I know, but come on...it's still an awesome song.  

Junior Murvin "Police and Thieves" (more popularly done by the Clash-that's how I learned about it.)  

Desmond Dekker "Shanty Town" and "Israelites"  I love these songs!  They'll get stuck in your head if you give them a listen.

the Clash "Guns of Brixton."  Kind of a dub style dance hall kind of thing, and probably the most Reggae thing the Clash did that I can think of off the top of my head.  I had to include the Clash on here, one of my favorite bands.

Kefka : Good choices. Ska is cool, as is rock steady and 2 tone

Stepping razor. I prefer always ska, but hey. Peter Tosh was a rude boy. Not some hippy like Marley. And yes, I know. It is a razor thin line and all that over there.... or it was.

Burning Spear is really good. My favorite song from them is "Sellout".

HR (Human Rights) is the best reggae artist in my opinion. He was the singer for one of the greatest Hardcore Punk bands of all time, Bad Brains, and introduced tons of Punks to Reggae. His solo work is so diverse its insane. My favorite songs from HR is "While you were sleeping" and "Just because i'm poor".

This is turning out to be my best thread ever and certainly the coolest in fact today I am listening to the COOL RULER himself, yes Mr Gregory Isscas, Top 10 and if you wanna be my number one!.

Do you like dub?

Brigand : Me and dub have a funny relationship, I like the b sides on 7" sometimes, but other times I don't see the point.

Perhaps I need someone to explain it to me as for some reason despite being a huge reggae fan, dub has always been somewhat mysterious to me.

I always see dub as the instrumental to reggae that you could toast over. King tubby for instance.

But then again, perhaps I am wrong?

I may be clashing over to the Ska area with this post, but if you haven't heard "Badfish" "Let's Go Get Stoned" or "Chica Me Tipo" by Sublime yet, I highly advise you do.
