I think this is probably due to the obsession Americans have with their version of football aka grid iron or whatever it's called.
The reason soccer isnt played is most likely due to the tradition that already exists there of playing other sports from childhood, such as baseball and football.
Some might also argue that it also isnt played due to the fact that you need a lot more talent to play soccer then you do football.
All in all I would say it's mostly lack of interest, because people dont like change.
