Grass is green because of photosynthesis. Plants absorb light primarily using the pigment chlorophyll, which is the reason that most plants have a green color. This light energy is used to take carbon dioxide, and water to create a carbohydrate and oxygen as a result.
The purpose of grass is to provide energy/food to plant consuming animals. It also prevents soil erosion from happening which is also a good thing

Well in different cultures there are many reasons something becomes popular.
Sometimes it is marketing, sometimes a good product, sometimes it's just an undefinable reason. For Twilight I would have to say it is mostly marketing and simple mindedness on the fans part rather then anything else. The people that like it tend to be those that just follow a trend or cannot fathom complex scenarios, so Twilight is certainly aimed at them. Now I shall ask the question, what is the highest frequency the human ear can hear?
