Committing yourself to a career is a really big deal. I decided to go to college this semester instead of going to university and becoming a teacher. Im not convinced that being a teacher is something I want to commit to doing for the rest of my life. I also had to take another year of college in order to make myself teaching degree worthy anyway, so I was ok with the decision. My mom is going to be pissed though. I know Im going to get that talk about how important it is to have a job and she will ask me what I wanna do for the rest of my life. The answer is I dont know; that is exactly the reason why I decided not to go.

Is 22 a late age to decide my career? what do you think? I think committing to a career is a massive event in your life, so if you arent ready for it, then dont rush your decision until youre ready, but only if you can afford to make a decision like that. I will likely have about 11000$ by the end of august. My school costs about 1700$ a semester, and Im taking 3 semesters, so that will cost me 5100$ roughly for a year of college, not including text books and transportation and food, so I will likely to have to eventually get another job so I can have some money saved up so I can move out.

How do you feel about this situation?

Well..... this is interesting to me for so many reasons.

First of all... how is teaching not a 'job' or a career?  I may have misunderstood your post, but it seems like you or your mother wouldn't consider it to be a "job"?  Or is this simply because you don't want to do it for the rest of your life?  If so, I understand your statements a little more.

Second of all..... teaching?  Look... I have to be brutally honest with you. If you don't think you want to do it for the rest of your life... don't even do it as a temporary fix.  That's a lot of time and money completely wasted for college. And trust me when I say this: teaching is FREAKING stressful. It's definitely a job /  career you should only go into if you're called to do it. If you haven't been destined to teach, the stress will affect you you do your job, and it's not fair for kids to NOT receive the best.  These are kids' / young adults' futures that are at stake.  If you're not meant to teach, you're bound to regret getting into the field a few years down the line.  I think I remember reading some stats like 80% of teachers quit in the first 5 years.  A lot of those are people who felt CALLED into the field. (Just something to keep in mind.)

As for 22 being too late?  Absolutely not!  I think there are plenty of 30 year olds and 40 year olds still making that decision! And I really don't meet a lot of 20 year olds that already know for sure what they want to do.  I wouldn't stress over that.  Personally, I'm impressed you have so much money saved up... wow!  Don't spend half of that on a degree which only serves a temporary job... please....

22 is definitely not to late to have your career chosen. I knew what I wanted to be when I was about 18; a truck driver. I love driving, I love going on long trips, and I love looking at the scenery. As long as you choose something that you know you will be happy with, then any age is alright to have picked your career, as long as you are serious about it, and are not going to change your mind 6 months down the road.

Singelli :

You misunderstood. I meant that Im not ready to commit to teaching being my career choice.

I feel like Id be a very good teacher, but I also feel like Id be selling myself short and not realizing my potential by committing to becoming a teacher. I feel like Im capable of so much more, but also the risk is significantly higher.

Well I do believe in my post that I mentioned you might mean that teaching won't be your long-term career choice. XD

I'm trying hard not to take offence at the last statement.  (Just playing! lol)

If you think you can do something greater, why not work towards that instead?  What is the risk?

Singelli :

I want to make films, and television shows, and create video games, and create and run businesses. I also believe I can do any one of those quite successfully. The difficult part is becoming relevant in any one of those industries. They are all quite saturated, so I would have to stand out and be uniquely different in order to make it successfully.

bobq : Personally, I'm someone that can live on the bare minimum as long as I have fun with my life so I think that we are very different in that way. But I think that if making films/movies is one of the things you want to do you should start a YouTube channel and see what happens. Buy a relatively cheap, but not bad quality camera and start to think of things to make. It could be anything from prank videos to actual serious short movies. I would probably watch either way because it seems like you would be pretty dedicated to something like that.

You seem to have devoted to the teaching career by putting a lot of time and money for the schooling. Perhaps you should finish up your degree, find a teaching job and use that time while your teaching to find what you truly want to do? There will be a few obstacles such as saving up the money, and distractions may come along but maybe if you keep your mind set on finding the "true" career path for you then I'm sure you could make it through. But hey,  I'm just 15, what do I know about choosing a career? If you do end up teaching, do us students a favor and lay off the homework just a tad bit please :p

I feel bad for not wanting a job just yet, even at the age of 23 where I should be working and earning money, but instead I'm trying to live out my life, the teenage part, that I missed due to not having a social life or friends~ But come September, at the latest, I'll be forcing myself to get a job even if it means something that I don't fully enjoy~
