During the Developers Conference earlier this week, one of PlayStation's leading men had revealed the true nature of the higher ups when they first released the PlayStation, the first game console in their long line that continues massively strong into today.

House said "PSX was viewed extremely negatively from large parts of the corporation," and "We were asked to volunteer to be part of it and nobody wanted to volunteer to be part of it except for me."

The system started out as a CD add on device as a deal Sony had with Nintendo for the Super Nintendo in competition with Sega's Sega CD, an add on for the Sega Genesis. The add on was later scrapped due to the failure of the Sega CD.

But Sony had different plans, and after Nintendo cut them loose, they made plans of their own to enter the gaming market. This turn of events led to the creation of the PSone (or PSX).

House had gone on to say "When I moved to SCE, my then boss said I was an idiot, why would I want to work on a toy. and that ‘It will never be a major part of Sony’s business.'

Of course his boss must have begged to differ as soon as the PlayStation took over the gaming world in its first generation of being a console, outselling both Nintendo's N64 and Sega's Saturn throughout that generation by a long shot, and continued to do so up until the PS3, and made a handheld console that was the only one to ever stand in competition with Nintendo's immensely popular GameBoy and DS lines.

Today, the PS4 is dominating the 8th generation so far, with nearly 8 million consoles sold in its first 9 months, overtaking the Nintendo Wii U and its competitor the Xbox One, and is sure to continue through the many years to come.

Hard to think that something so doubted would end up being a companies strong point, and ended up trouncing the market for so long.

What are your thoughts on these words? How do you think it would have impacted the brand if nobody was optimistic about it?

I love how you are still writing your own articles in your own words.

It surprises me. I find it outrageous that nobody originally wanted this system to be made. This is crazy. I mean, I remember when I got my Play Station 1. I had so much fun playing some Army guy and Tetris Plus and some MotorCross game on it. I just can not believe that they originally did not want to make this.

Despite always being a Nintendo fanboy, I'm glad the PSX came to be. It led to a new brand of gaming, one that was worthwhile and fun. Its creation forced Nintendo to up their game. Who knows whether the Wii or Wii U (my favorite consoles) would have existed had there been no Playstation, no Xbox. Today, Nintendo produces most of the games I want, with the exception of PC games.

I admit, though, that I'm mostly a PC gamer these days. Ever since I discovered Steam and Humble Bundle, my library has grown like crazy. Now I have over 250 games, most of which I have at least tried out. I have probably spent no more than $100 on all of it, and could have kept it all under $40 had I been more patient.

I did not know that they were so pessimistic about it to begin with, but I am glad that some of the team stuck with it. The PlayStation consoles are my favorite systems to game on, and I would not have had as many great experiences had it not come to fruition.

Strictly speaking though, if no one was optimistic about it at all, the systems would have likely failed and died off. You have to have someone pushing a specific product, or it will never take off.

I looked into this ages ago.
The guys involved had to beg Sony to find a stand alone system, and even then, they spin them off to a storage branch (their music label I believe) to minimise their losses.
Its actually hilarious though. Nintendo crafted their biggest rival by dropping out of their Partnership with sony.
A bad long term move.
