Well, Spongebob was a powerhouse of comedy. It had a LOT of funny moments, such as "Leedle-leedle-leedle-lee", "DEEEAAAGGUUH" or "Who you callin pinhead?". Then the movie came out. It was a good movie, at least to me. In real life, the creator Stephen Hillenburg didn't plan for seasons AFTER the movie, as the movie was supposed to be the series finale. But due to fan interest, it was renewed for another season, without Hillenburg as he gave up his position as the lead writer, although supervising the series, creating the "New Spongebob". Personally, I HATE IT. The once funny, nautical characters have become VERY unlikable. Spongebob, who was funny as a naive character, just became an unlikable creeper with nothing to do but just annoy people. Sure, he annoyed people before the movie, but it was actually funny. In the Post-movie, he was annoying, but with no sense of comedy.
-- Patrick was a funny character by being unintentionally unintelligent at times, while still showing some signs of him having some common sense. This gave us funny moments like "Is mayonnaise an instrument?" or "THE SHELL HAS SPOKEN!". Now, Patrick is completely dumb. And in episodes where he's not dumb, he becomes arrogant to the point where you just wanna punch him square in the face. Or Fins. Whatever he has. 
And then there's Squidward. He's the only likable character left in this show. Why? Because he tries to get away from the two stooges Spongebob and Patrick. But then he has to be the one that receives the pain. Don't believe me? He gets his toenail ripped off. And not in a comedic way, but in a realistic way. Realistic as in that could actually happen to us.
Mr. Krabs. Oh boy. A caring man, while also being cheap at the same time before the movie. Now, he does whatever he can to get money. Not only that, he's actually driven his rival, Plankton, to actually attempt suicide. Think I'm exaggerating? Watch "One Coarse Meal". Even Stephen Hillenburg himself hates the episode.
People like new Spongebob, and I'm fine with that, as it has funny moments every now and then. But my opinion is that New Spongebob is HORRIBLE. What about you?

In my opinion after the Spongebob movie there was a few good episodes afterwards like some of them made in 2005 and like one or two in 2006 but after that it was ALL down hill with every episode being filled with annoying characters.
 
I mean I could at least stand to watch the ones made in 2009 but now I cannot take any of the new episodes seriously at all. The only time I even watch the new episodes is when I make fun of them for how bad they are. In fact some of the newer episodes are suppose to be comedic but they are just actually sad because of what happens to the characters in some of them such as the episode you mentioned.
 
In my opinion they should have just ended Spongebob after the movie preventing these new episodes.

Well, i don't really have a strong opinion but if someone ask me (like you) i would probably pick the older Spongebob, some newer episodes makes me want to vomit ( example: Pal for Gary) or want to punch Patrick in the face (example: Pet Sitter Pat), meanwhile older episodes are way funnier and doesn't use gross humor, so i prefer the older ones.

No, I do not hate the new Spongebob. I do not like it as much as the old Spongebob. Not even close. But the new one isn't that bad. It is sti;ll better than most cartoons nowadays.

That is the worst news I ever heard they made a new Spongebob I don't believe it. How does the worst show ever made get a remake that does not make any sense. When you have all those great shows that not even lasted two seasons for example Martin Mystery, Invader Zim and Archie's weird Mysteries that really makes me mad. I mean that doesn't make sense at all. That show was so immature I would never let my kids watch that.

Gosh, I've been wanting to see a thread on this subject for a while now.

New Spongebob is barely the same show after the movie. All the characters at one point or another in the new episodes have been made completely unlikable. Spongebob has become both freaky and creepy, and doesn't even seem to understand what's good or bad anymore, yet is still made out to be the "good guy" in practically all episodes, no matter how many of those times he's in the wrong. Patrick is a jerk, and never gets called out on it, punished, or anything (see Pet Sitter Pat). Basically, the characters original traits have been blown out of proportion. Even Mrs. Puff had an episode where she straight out wanted to MURDER Spongebob. Heck, even the random townspeople are jerks now. Mr. Krabs is kind of hard to like when he drives Plankton to suicide, and especially when after that, the writers seem to want me to root for Mr. Krabs in that situation.

The gross things shown now is terrible as well. Like you mentioned, The Splinter and the toenail scene are the worst offenders. Funny how those scenes are perfectly fine for tv, but Just One Bite was censored for practically no good reason.

Meh, I still like the show but I havent watched it in a while. I would have to say I like the newer ones better than the originals, though I don't really know why, I guess I just havent seen much of the originals

No I don't like it but I lost interest in the whole series before the new Spongebob even came to be it just gets old pretty fast for me which is usually something that happens for me but it has happened with Spongebob.

But yeah I'll have to agree even with losing interest in the show I still think the new Spongebob is worse then the old one.

I don't hate it but I do dislike almost ALL of the new episodes. Of course it's not the same cause the original guy left. This kind of thing just eventually happens to good shows, sadly.

But ! There was one episode that was kind of funny at the end. The name of the episode is called face freeze. I use to like seeing Mr. Krabs laugh like an monster with his hideous face freeze. After seeing it a couple of more times it quickly got dull.

It's sad cause I still laugh at some of the older episodes. It's random stupidly was pure gold...

Spongebob, in my opinion, is stupid. 

I won't say I like it, because I don't. However, I won't say I dislike it either, as there have been a few episodes that I have watched that have been pretty good. 

As so some who has always loved Spongebob and would never hate it, I really just dislike the new episodes of the show. The plot in the new episodes are just stupid. Like in all those legends for bikini bottom, they were just lame and not thought out. You need a sacrifice of the most miserable persons house? How is that supposed to work? Also, with one of them, the whole thing, about the plug in the bottom of the ocean was just Patrick's bet time story? That is just so stupid I can't even believe that a franchise just as good and popular as Spongebob would even think of doing that, it just completely scares me of why they would do that. Spongebob was all great until it started to go downhill so the Pest Of The West episode. That really triggered the downfall, and I don't know if i can ever forgive that episode for just ruining what was my favorite show. I am still waiting for another great one like keep bikini bottom beautiful, but so far I shave been waiting for a good number of years, since 2008?, for Spongebob to make of those. I guess I will have to wait.

So yes, I do hate the new Spongebob, but it still love Spongebob and I'm hoping the best to make it better.

I wouldn't say that I really dislike it at all. Yeah, I can definitely say that it has gotten to the point that maybe they're running out of ideas, and it's getting stale, but it's still pretty enjoyable for me. I don't see anything really wrong with it now.

I haven't really watched a whole lot of the new Spongebob and it actually wasn't until very recently that I discovered the shows were still even being made.  The new shows don't make me laugh as much, but I don't hate them. They're good enough for entertaining purposes, anyways.

Yeah they're pure garbage, the original was sorta overrated but still the new ones a total garbage in every way shape and form!

I don't watch Spongebob, but I'm around kids that do every once in a while. Every Friday morning, this day care comes in to the bowling alley I work at, and its FULL of little kids. So the manager puts Spongebob on the TVs for them. And, of course, one of the big screen TVs is right outside my pro shop door. I'm not sure if they're the new episodes, but all I know is I can't stand his laugh. I can't believe I remember this, but there's one episode where he's constantly laughing, but then he eventually loses it, or something...ugh, it drives me crazy!

It's hilarious that people say a show stinks now because it wasn't the same when they watched it.

This also leaves out giving New Spongebob a "chance".

Seriously, There ARE fantastic episodes after the movie. ( Dunces and Dragons, Roller Cowards, Krabby Road, The Bad Guy Club For Villains, Treats!, and Plankton's Pet JUST TO NAME A FEW)

CalvinFan64 : Yes, it's true that there are some great episodes after the movie, and season 9, while not having the best episodes, as well as some stinkers like Little Yellow Book, has had a bit of improvement. But personally, I think there are too many Atlantis Squarepantis, Pet Sitter Pats, and Face Freeze kind of episodes for me to say I like the new episodes.
   Hopefully season 10 can bring it back to pre 2007, where a huge majority of episodes were good, if not great.
