So, there is a lot of anime out there. Almost too many too count. The vast majority of them go unknown, and hidden to the general anime-watching public. People talk about Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-oh!, Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha, Fairy Tail, etc. all the time, but there is a bunch of anime out there that is certainly better (If we were to judge the mainstream anime by certain standards: they have rather poor, repetitive stories, bland characters, and predictable events, among other things). The better anime goes unnoticed, and the majority of people fail to see the true gems out there. A lot of the people that only watch the mainstream anime say that they love anime, but are unwilling to watch anything beyond the well-known anime. Am I the only one that gets frustrated by this? Just wondering.

A lot of the people that only watch the mainstream anime say that they love anime, but are unwilling to watch anything beyond the well-known anime.

I also see it the other way around. I know quite a few (including myself at one point), who judged the genre as a whole based what's mainstream. I thought for the longest time that I would never have anything to do with anime after seeing parts of mainstream shows. Obviously that's changed.

As for whether it annoys me that mainstream viewers don't try out substream? Nah. I don't care for mainstream and those who watch mainstream wouldn't care for the anime I watch anyway.

EideticMemory : But isn't korra and the Avatar both mainstream anime... So wouldn't you care for mainstream.

I watch both mainstream and substream and like them both the same.

i.e. SAO and Log horizon.

mourinhosgum : I thought about that. Perhaps my information is faulty, but I didn't think they had even close to the following that are seen in the ones listed. And you'd be surprised how many Vizzed users don't know Avatar / have asked me about my profile pic because they just don't know where it's from.

If you like/love anything, you have to go in depth and find your own tastes. Stuff that no one's never even heard of, or stuff that people like. Long running series like One Piece and Dragon Ball Z are really repetitious and can put a damper on the experience. Makes you really want it to end. Adding a new character isn't going to make something fine and dandy. I prefer season long anime instead, but I'd always want more.

If anything, anyone who keeps acknowledging these mainstream or old anime I can't stand.

EideticMemory : Oh, Avatar. Isn't it that movie with the blue people.lol. Still need to watch korra. I watched the first couple episodes on demand. And there was like a 4 episode skip. Might watch it once i finish code geass. So probably 3-4 days.

mourinhosgum :
EideticMemory : Fun fact: Avatar is actually not an anime. It's an American cartoon influenced by anime.

---

Personally when people say they watch anime the only ones they've really watched are the shonen's or some of the more popular anime and cartoon wise like Death Note. But they've never actually watched some of the more smaller substream anime like Inuzama Eleven, Fate Zero, Steins Gate etc. I wouldn't really call them anime watchers, just mainstream cartoon watchers.
