This month's Speed Run competition is for 'Donkey Kong' for the Nintendo NES. You can play it here:
https://www.vizzed.com/play/donkey-kong-nes-online-nintendo-nes-244-game

The point of this competition is to beat the game as fast as you can.

VIDEO REQUIRED: You must post a video of yourself accomplishing the score you submit. You must use the RGR Plugin's built in video recording capabilities. The video submission has to be a single video, it cannot be broken into parts so if you recorded it in parts, be sure to merge them into a single video.

RULES: You MUST play the game using the RGR Plugin in 'Timetrial Mode' and take a screenshot of the ending screen by pressing F6 when you've completed the game. To play in 'Timetrial Mode', scroll down the page where it shows the Speed Runs, you'll see a link that says 'Click Here to Compete for Speed Run', click that. Once you've taken your screenshot, click the link near that one that says 'Click Here to Submit your Speed Run' to submit your speed run. The video must be uploaded to the vizzed youtube account. The video submission has to be a single video, it cannot be broken into parts.

You cannot cheat or use glitches of any sort.

Prizes:
1st = 10,000 Viz
2nd = 2,500 Viz
3rd = 1,000 Viz

mourinhosgum : Today is an extremely busy day and I didn't want to invest hours searching for a game that was quick to beat

You can look, sure. I actually just created a competition which will also help me find short games.

Davideo7 : I am fairly new to how speed runs work, so I have a few questions. 1. What do you mean by "upload it to the you-tube account" do you mean that we use your you-tube account, or do we give you the link to our video? 2. Do we have to take both a video of the speed run, and a screen shot of the end? 3. I understand the no cheating, but does using the F2 and F4 buttons to replay a level again and again till you pass considered cheating?    -Brandon Fahy

If we tie, do we both get the prize? That would be awesome and at the point I'm posting this, I'm tied with someone.

Interesting start to this contest. Right now, it is a 3 way tie. Will be crazy if that sticks the whole month.

I've been watching the videos aligned at the start of the game for those that have submitted thus far, Foxyman1113's run is technically the fastest (followed by Awesome-Kid, and then followed by boomer1709).

I see rcarter has uploaded a video now too. I'll have to see where his factors in. . .

Edit :

From fastest to slowest. . .

rcarter2 > Foxyman1113 > Awesome-Kid > boomer1709

boomer1709 : The luck has less to do with the barrels, and more to do with the next 2 levels. For level 2, the luck all lies in when that flame decides to travel up the ladder. For level 3, it is all where the flame chicks spawn, and where they decide to move. But it is possible to jump over them, just harder than the barrels because they move slower and can turn around.

Fun game to speedrun. Pretty crappy screenshot support as it didn't work or didn't upload to server and now I see my time is 1:59 according to the screenshot but I have 1:26 in the video I uploaded.
Anyway very fun game, luck based though.

EDIT: Shall I do it again and press F6 as soon as I hit the last 'pillar?' And does the timer start when pressing start or after you gain control of Mario?

speedruntrainer : The timer starts the moment the game loads up. So if you spend 5 seconds on the title screen, you just used 5 seconds on the clock. Doesn't just start when you hit start to begin the game. Don't know where you got the "My video shows 1:26". According to your video, you reached the target screenshot moment at 1:30 exactly. As for the reason why your submission shows 1:59, that has nothing to with the screenshot upload. In time trial mode, the moment you press F6 to take a screenshot, it records the exact time on the clock that you pressed it. When you upload it to the server, it will have that time on it. So it doesn't matter how long it took to upload the screenshot. For example, I took the screenshot for my 1:26 submission in the afternoon. I don't like to put my submissions on the moment I make them. I like to wait a bit. I uploaded that screenshot 2 days AFTER I took the screenshot. Because I took that screenshot at 1:26 on the timetrial clock, that is permanently stamped on that screenshot. So whenever I upload it, that is the time it will have on it. So again, it does not matter how long it takes for you to upload your screenshot. That time is set the moment you take your screenshot. Now, as for the reason why your video shows you reaching the target screenshot in 1:30, there are only 2 possible explanations.

1) When you pressed the button to start your video, it brings up your file explorer to create a save file for that video. During that time, the clock is still running. So if you decide to take some time giving your file a name and putting it somewhere specific, you are running the clock.
2) The video you submitted is not a video of the game session in which you did your speed run.

Number 2 would be cheating. I assume that you are not cheating, and am inclined to say that you likely just spent too long saving your video file when you started. And given the fact that you did not know that the timer starts the moment the game loads, and not when you are actually playing the game, it is likely that is what happened.

Here is my suggestion. Don't worry about giving your video file a title or putting it in a specific place on your computer. Just hit the button to start recording, immediately hit save, and let the file be put wherever it is automatically put with the name it is automatically given. Location and title does not matter, and wastes time. And in a short game like this, every second is precious (hence why there is a 3 way tie for 2nd). At the MOST, you should only spend ONE second during that whole process so you can start playing the game as quick as possible so you aren't wasting the clock.

Ah, thanks. I thought the timer stopped when you stand on the last pillar but it's not in this case, I didn't know the timing was slightly different than the SRL timing which stops as soon as you hit the last pillar so Donkey Kong falls down. Can anyone change the video title to the vizzed timing method then, which is 1:30.

I did pay attention to the emu startup timing, so that's why I hit record as soon as possible after the reset button.
The file I got is DonkeyK.avi and I hit save as soon as it asks,

Now I know the reason why the screenshot didn't work. After saving the video, I press start on my N64 USB controller which I use now
For some reason the PC thinks the window isn't active, so I had to click it with the mouse.

Thanks for the explanation though.
I'm wondering what my time is now according to Vizzed. Thanks for the information, rcarter2

speedruntrainer : The time according to Vizzed won't change. That particular screenshot you took was taken at 1:59 after the game loaded. You can't change that unless you play it again and submit another screenshot. So until you make a new submission, it will always be 1:59. I will also note that even when you hit the reset button, the timer doesn't reset. The timer just keeps going as long as the game window is open. If you want to start a new session to reset the timer, you need to close the game window and open it again. It is inconvenient, but that is just how it is. Just letting you know so you don't keep clicking reset when you make a mistake, get a really good run, and end up having it record as a long time. Happened to me once when I didn't realize the timer doesn't reset just by hitting the reset button.

I am quite certain that clicking 'reset' actually resets the timer for speedruns. It does for me at least. . .

madison : That might have gotten fixed. A while back, when I tested it, it did not. I let a game go for 1 minute, hit reset, took a screenshot at 10 seconds, and it said 1:10 when I uploaded the screenshot. But that was more near when the speed run feature was made.

aspeedruntrainer: Just reminding you that you do need to upload your video of your most recent speed run for it to count.
