We all know those times where in the days of the internet, something goes viral and everyone starts doing it. Things such as Gangnam Style, The Harlem Shake, and The Knife Game are all examples of this. But what I ask is that do you think it might get out of hand? the dances were for the most part harmless, but the knife game to it to a new level, where you would literally harm yourself and might even cut off a finger or two, just for fun. Why do you think people do these things? Do you think it might get even more dangerous?

It's all just for attention and also, our own stupidity. A lot of the people I go to school with are just morons. It's our generation that can't really think. To be honest, I don't really know why people do these things. At least they're not harming other people, except for the knock out game... That was horrible.

Yes sometimes internet fads can get out of hand and be a danger. A good example is the Knockout game. That is were young people find random people and hit them on the side of the head or behind. The fad even spread after videos were posted on the internet. It has lead to serious injuries among victims. Another example is the pass out game were teens use a rope, belt or anything to choke themselves to get the feeling of high. The fast started a few years ago after a video of it was posted. Sadly some teens died. There are also videos of exploding stuff that people have tried and been hurt or killed. So yeah a lot of things on the internet can get out of hand quickly.

I know how you feel on that. The internet is a sick, messed up place. And most fads pop up out of nowhere, get blown WAY out of proportion, then die out and fade into obscurity. Most people who knowingly put themselves in serious danger are just idiots. Now, I'll admit I did try that a few times, not actually knowing what it really was. But I just used a spoon, and once a plastic knife. But that was awhile ago.

tornadocam : All that was a hoax. It was proven. But, I'm sure somewhere some morons actually tried it.

It started out as a hoax but it has been in the news of young people trying the knockout game. So what started off as a hoax ended up turning real. I read last month were a man was hospitalized after he was hit from behind by young people. They were arrested but showed how things on the internet that even start of as hoaxes can turn into something dangerous. So yeah people did try it.

I think that people only do stuff like the "Knife Game" or it's variants for attention, which is pretty dumb for me, there are a lot of different ways one can get attention without putting yourself in danger. Just like User said, they get insane popularity for a bit then fade into obscurity, and everything you did will seems idiotic the next day.

Even fads that aren't dangerous, like new dances (Gangnam Style, Harlem Shake, etc...) or a new anime/show everyone is excited about (The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Attack On Titan, Game Of Thrones, etc...) are there for a lot longer, but for the time they get into fame it just seems annoying for everyone who isn't a fan it, or doesn't really care for it, since they see it literally everywhere.

If you want the answer on how fads (Mostly internet fads) come to live, it's because of the leaders. Let's take Flappy Bird for example. It was getting small-medium attention, as little people knew about it. Then, PewDiePie made a video on it, and everyone starting going nuts about Flappy Bird for a while, and now barely anyone mentions it. It's the "Higher Class" of people one can say, that start an internet (or any) fad.

The minute anything gets popular.
Can any activity get out of hand?
Yes.

There are several cases of excess.
From the mundane to the extreme.

I honestly do not need to make an example of either.
Due to not wanting any part in expanding the problems by bringing attention to any of them.

To keep the conversation short on my end?
I'll sum up and just say that I am Afraid FOR the generations younger than myself.
The more people can teach others to think for themselves?
The Better.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.

It might get more dangerous, but I don't think it's going to get worse than cutting fingers off. People do this because everyone does it and everybody shares it through social media, so you feel dumb if you don't join. Sometimes you see funny or good stuff, but most of the time it's just rubbish.

I think it can get worse, even if somebody does actually get hurt in a video, most people who watch it just won't care about the consequences, and they will try it out as well. We just need to wait for somebody who is stupid enough to do something that dangerous, but it's bound to happen.
