Have you gotten to dissect a frog yet? Are you going to?

What was it like?

I did it last year for Biology 11, and it was actually pretty cool, we dissected a worm, too.

I haven't taken Biology yet, but my nursing major friends have told me that they dissect cats instead. Of course, they don't go out and kill cats to dissect them, it's just that there's already so many dead cats on the road that it's better to dissect already dead animals than to kill frogs and dissect them.

It's weird, I know. I don't understand it myself, but I guess I can't go into detail until I actually take a Biology class first.

EDIT-

Okay, it turns out that they actually order cats that will be put down, due to them being strays or they just can't live anymore, rather than picking the dead ones from the road. Talk about misinformation. xD

In my Life Science class ,in 7th grade, I dissected a worm, clam, fish, frog, and other things as well (I forget them). But the frog we dissected, I thought would be like a regular pond frog, about medium size. My classmates thought the same thing. The real frogs we were to dissect were bull frogs, but these bullfrogs were huge! My class was lucky and had most males (one female) so digging through the eggs to see the intestines wasn't a problem for most of the class. But, it was pretty fun doing all the dissections. Now I am in Earth Science, which I don't believe is very interesting (and also I want to study cellular biology).

I did a worm in 7th grade, a frog in 8th grade, and I went the route of inorganic chemistry and physics through high school so I never made it to the fetal pigs.  Anatomy and how things work is really interesting and I wish I had gone back and done the other animals.  Cutting up things isn't gross to me; it's fascinating.  It's cool how much is packed into the body of animal and how efficient everything is in relation to its job.

Cool stuff.

Loads of times, but not only Frogs. Cats, Worms, Snakes, Squid you name it!

I always love it, it's just the smell that sometimes grosses me out. Otherwise, dissections are always really fascinating experiences for me.

I actually had to dissect a bull's eye and a pig embryo. I preferred the former because the parts were easier to identify. The embryo was still too frozen to be usable, and the organs were too tiny to be distinguishable

I never got to dissect a frog yet, and I am not sure if I am going to do that later in high school. When I took biology last year in grade 8, my class had to dissect owl pellets, but we never dissected a dead animal.

Ohh gosh yes! I did this way back when I was younger.. at the time I thought it was so disgusting .. I didn't enjoy doing the project at all. Now if I were to do it I would be a little more interested and open to the idea.. as of nothing really grosses me out as much as it used to.

I had not taken Biology in High School, so I never had a chance to dissect a frog. I heard it’s pretty cool though, and I always wanted to try it, but I guess now I’ll never get a chance to unless they do something similar in college.

I never did any dissecting for my biology class. I dissected a frog last year in my anatomy class. I also dissected a rat and a sheep's testes. The anatomy of any animal is very interesting because you can determine on how a minor or major part of something right in front of you. It's pretty neat to look at them! Although any dead animal or organ may reek so much that it may cause crying since I've faced it.

NFK, I had the same feeling before I dissected my first frog. It really wasn't that bad once I started. It's like taking apart a complex machine. All you have to do is deal with the smell and juices. The first time was a little icky, but the rest were fascinating experiences.

Mr. Zed : it's gross but fascinating.

I haven't dissected in two years but they're such memorable experiences I can recount each of them well.

zanderlex, like you I hope to do more in college.

I dissected a frog when I was in middle school. I was in the 7th grade. It was okay as we talked about the organs. When I was in 9th grade we dissected insects and looked at a actual heart. In my Biology class in college. It was interesting. But I kind of have mixed feelings about dissecting.

Oh man. Sure, I have dissected frogs. But I have dissected many different things. Here is the list-

Frogs
Many different insects
Cow Lung
Cow Heart
Cow Eye
Rats
Cats (3 cats, actually)
Clams
Starfish
Craw fish
Bass
Fetal Pigs
Goliath Tarantula
Garter Snake
Prairie Rattesnake
Pigeon

I know I have done a few more, but can't think of them right now. It is fascinating how the body works.

Oddly enough I have dissected quite a few things before, but not frogs, here is what I have dissected for my science classes in the past few years:

Shark
squid
worms
several kinds of insects
snakes

I guess it isn't that much, but I will tell you I have dissected too many bugs, I have dissected squid more than once, and that stuff smells horrible, it stunk up the entire hallway when we started doing it! I just think it is funny because out of all the things to dissect, frogs is one of the most common and I have yet to do it... I am guaranteeing I will be dissecting more bugs and other animals along the road because science is one of my favorite classes and I am still in biology this year...sooo.....

The only things I remember that I was forced to dissect was a worm and some starfishes and a few insects. However, it was one heck of a horrible experience. The whole school smelled horrible after the dissection. I almost threw up from it.
