My favorite of the 2d Metroid games is probably Super Metroid. It definitely has some great graphics and a pretty nice story. The gameplay is also very easy to pick up on and go with. Though there are some flaws, like the fact you need to use five missiles to open a door. Kinda preferred how Zero Mission did it where it took one. I also liked being able to grab ledges in the GBA games. Though overall I prefer Super Metroid, especially for the great boss battles like Phantoon. Plus I do love the maze-like areas Super Metroid has.

Metroid Fusion, man. I was playing it right from the start at age 3. It's suspenseful, creepy, awesome, puzzling, and ridiculously fun. But some of those bosses were quite difficult and frustrating.

The first metroid game is fun but it did have multiple flaws. 
For me Super Metroid fixed what the first two Metroids did wrong and made a stunning game. 
That is my favourite Metroid game and it ranks high in my favourite games of all time. 

I noticed a lot of people like metroid fusion. I have nothing wrong with that but for me the game felt too easy. Where you had to go was really obvious and there wasn't many secrets or depth.
