The Texas board of education has a huge influence on the content of textbooks that will be sold around the country to public schools.

1/3 of the panel of textbook reviewers(who happen to be creationists) in Texas don't want evolution to be taught and will try to reject any biology text book that has the theory of evolution in it. It's possible that the theory of evolution may be omitted from textbooks all across the country.

So, do you think the theory of evolution should be taught in science class?

I do not agree totally with evolution, like humans coming from apes (or wherever humans are said to evolve from), but evolution of other animals is a totally legitimate topic, and should not be excluded.

Evolution of other animals helps us understand how animals react to their biomes, and basically adaptability.

However, with human evolution, I do not see much use in that, so I guess I can understand their choice. I may be ignorant right now, about human evolution.

Does this choice have anything to do with religion, or any other factors as well? Or are they omitting evolution just because they don't want it to be taught?

Sidewinder : There are many quotes by the members of the panel that specifically object to the theory of evolution being taught on the basis that evolution doesn't conform with biblical creation. So yes, I would say their main motivation to omit the theory of evolution is based on their religious beliefs.

Here we go again.

This is a very simple matter. Evolution is one of the most well-entrenched scientific principles we have. It has been confirmed and reconfirmed countless times and is the base of the entire modern field of biology. It not only explains organismal diversity, but evolutionary principles have also helped in numerous other fields including medicine, industry, and agriculture. Quite simply, evolution must be taught as part of a proper science education, and anyone who says differently has no business speaking out on scientific matters. Period.

And yet I'll bet these people are fine with creationism being in the classroom...
The u.s education system seems to be nose diving. On top of chronic underfunding there are uneducated people making calls on the running of education. Fantastic.
Next nasa will hire farmers to manage them.

Evolution is accepted by the vast majority of scientists. So yes, I think people should be taught the theory of evolution if they want to learn about science. It is also interconnected with a lot of other subjects taught in school, such as biology, taxonomy, and ecology to name a few.

Learning about the theory doesn't even mean you're forced to accept it. Same with all other scientific theories taught in science class.

It is science so it should be taught in science class. Should religion not be taught in Sunday school?

Actually here we didn't have science as a subject in school. It was just chemistry, physics and math that mostly dealt with scientific matters and evolution was taught in biology classes and partly in philosophy classes. For religious studies we had religion as a subject for those who were church members and ethics for those who were not.

I hope this thread doesn't  turn into a evolution vs. creationism debate as such. But maybe it is pointless to hope so and too late already.

Brigand : Unfortunately for myself, the theory of evolution was never even touched upon in any of my HS or Middle School biology classes. Not that it was forbidden, I just happened to grow up in a very religious community and the teachers either didn't want to teach it because they didn't accept it, but mostly they were worried about backlash from parents who didn't want it taught to their students. I think this is still a big problem in a good many places.

sloanstar1000 :

Well it boggles my mind. I always figured where I grew up was as religious as anyplace else but science and religion was always sort of separated and nobody objected either way. Atheism was a big no no but so was also getting worked up about what was taught about science in general. A parrent objecting against something that was in the study plan would have been seen as a nut and claiming it is because of Christian beliefs would not have helped since everybody else saw themselves as Christians too. I guess it is kind of hard to explain. Well, how people see these things are seen differently in different parts of the world I guess is all I can say.

Since I'm not in school so this really won't affect me, but when I have kids and I send them to school, it might affect them, to my opinion, I don't think humans came from another animal (evolution) or created by one guy (creationism), but that's just my point of view though and a lot of people got a theory on what they want to teach their children, but if we look at it, we got catholic schools, so I think of those schools can teach creationism, while a normal school can teach Evolution, I think that'll balance things out.

I think that it should be taught with the understanding that the evolution theory is just that, a theory. If my science knowledge is correct a theory means that there is no evidence to back up the theory. However, this does bring up the conflict that there might be some students who take it as hardcore fact. Also, what about the creationist view? I mean if you teach one theory you might as well teach the other one right? That way students may be able to believe which theory that they want to believe in (or in some cases neither one). However, this is just my take on it.

angelbear1297 : I would just like to dispel a common misconception about the definition of the word "theory", there's a difference between the colloquial use of the word "theory", and a "scientific theory".

Evolution is a scientific theory, Just like the theory of gravity is a scientific theory, as is cell theory or nuclear theory.

A scientific theory is defined as a well substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world. The theory is comprised of facts, the fact of evolution is that allele frequencies change over time. So evolution is both a fact and a theory.

If we're going to teach children about the theory of evolution, they should understand what a scientific theory is first I guess.

did you just call gravity a theory? that it cannot be proven beyond doubt? jump. oh look, youre standing. now breed 2 animals of enough similarity that they CAN breed, but enough difference that they are different creatures. oh look, they just evolved. the exact methods in which things work MAY be wrong, but the fact that when animals breed, they exchange different genes, and eventually become a different animal, is in fact proof beyond any form of doubt by anyone with 1/4 of a brain, that evolution does happen, and is the reason for life being as it is at any stage in time.

If youre not going to read the post in context (saying evolution is just a theory is like saying gravity is just a theory), and arent actually going to look into the statement (it is a theory, if you bothered to google it you would see that) then id recommend you dont bother posting in the debate forum.
You know.
Since you arent actually making any valid points.
If you read the post properly you'd have realised i was supporting evolution.
Incidentally a child is not an evolution.

Evolution is NOT a theory and to censor it from science teachings would be horrible on many levels. To deny the obvious it to bury your head in the sand.

I personally would prefer my kids to learn things without having to be filtered through peoples religions to tell us if they find it ok or not.

Jordanv78 :
In technicality it is a theory.
Sloans last post explained it quite well.
In science it does not mean unproven.

In normal terminology it evidently isnt just a theory.

At any rate the needs of the many shouldnt be curtailed by the desires of a few.
If parents dont like it they should be able to pull their kids from that particular class.
They have no right to impede other peoples kids though.

On the matter of gravity, you might be surprised to know just how tenuous it really is. Gravity is not well understood. We don't know where it comes from, why it exists, or why it behaves the way it does (gravity is much weaker than the other three fundamental forces controlling the universe).  Some scientists genuinely feel it doesn't exist. I even remember hearing about a child math genius who was on his way to disproving gravity altogether.

But that is the hallmark of any decent scientific theorem. It has to be falsifiable. Gravity can be proven wrong, evolution can be proven wrong, any scientific theory can be proven wrong. Something that is not falsifiable, like the existence of a deity, cannot be tested scientifically, and thus has no place in a science classroom.

I believed god knew we would not grasp the idea he made one singular cell organism to form all forms of life. The bible was all a lie except the 10 commandments. However he still protects us with all his available power acting as a shining light to forever guide us, whether we are believers or not. As long as we are human.
