You all heard the phrase "Money can't buy you happiness", and in my opinion, it is very true. However, during these times, money is a huge problem for people. Many are seeking money to help with their financial needs, provide for their family, etc, and there are people who go to certain lengths to get money, such as murder, robbery/theft, etc. People seem to be unhappy with little money, because to them, that is what helps them live. Can't buy food without money, so what are you going to do?

In my opinion, you can be happy without any money, because maybe you live on a farm and are self-sufficient, growing your own food, living with the love of your life, trusting God to provide for you...that's not so bad, not bad at all.

Do you feel this way? What do you think about this?

Have you been smoking weed? Youre very philosophical today lol.

The answer seems an obvious yes to me.
Certainly money can buy happiness. If you are unhappy with the money the problem is you. Either you arent doing what you want with your life or its turned you into an a hole so no one likes you.
As for being happy without money, we've all seen that one person with a terrible lot in life who greets every day with a smile.
Having no money brings you down, but it doesent neccessarily keep you there.

I think you can be happy without money. I see this homeless guy every now and then hanging out outside a little store. HE has no money, or home, but he always has a big smile on his face.

Money can make you happy but you can't live without it because the money is the root of evil things there are people who commit crime and they're happy for doing that. For me I can't be happy because without money I can't buy the things I need like food, shelter and clothes that I need to live.

Money can't buy happiness. But it is something you need if you want food, life indoors, or anything really. You may be happy without money if you lived on a farm in a country that doesn't tax, that way it would be like how you described. You can be happy without money, but you're going to have a very hard life.

jnisol : The saying is "The love of money is the root of all evil" Money itself isn't evil.

Sidewinder : That is very true! But sometimes, the money can make you really happy; for example, if you win to a lottery! It will bring you some happiness, in my opinion.

Regarding the farm idea, then, you are right. But if someone without money wouldn't have a farm what can do??

If we take very broadly "no money" and include any sort of wealth, I would say that you cannot be happy. Food and water are necessities, and if one does not have them, they are too distracted in order to be happy. Rarely is there a person who can starve to death with a smile on their face, and even more rare (I think impossible) is there a person that is content with starving to death.

The way I see it, money does not buy happiness directly but it can be used to buy the rescorces and the means to obtain happiness. Money indirectly leads to happiness.

No, I don't think so. Even though I live in a very small town where most people here are mostly poor, but very happy because there's a vibrant community here that comes together. I think you can be very happy with just enough money to live less than modest.

However, absolutely no money means that you can't buy the basic necessities to even survive, or you depend on other people for your food and living, which doesn't usually make a happy person.

It's important to point out the difference between money and wealth though, money is useless without wealth and the simple belief that money actually is worth something, you use money to go to the store to buy wealth. There are plenty of people around the globe who have wealth in the form of food and places to live, but don't actually have a monetary system.

Well yeah I guess . Once I have the people and things I love Money does not really matter . The only reason we need money is to satisfy our needs and wants . So if I did not need to be satisfied I would not need money

I have heard that quote a million times "Money can't buy you happiness", but not having money also doesn't make anyone happy as well, because if you look at it, without money, you can't be able to buy some of the things you need in order to survive though like the basic needs like milk, bread, a roof over your head and electric to run your appliances (like a fridge) as well, because without those, you're screwed more likely, so in a way, having some money is better than having too much or no money at all, at least to my point of view, I much rather have a bit of money, but not too much or too little, in case all the things I need.

Yeah, you can't buy happiness with it but on the other hand, you aren't happy if you don't have any money either. So it is kind of a both ways quote. I think it is more of something you need in order to live life and function every day to buy necessities like food, water and shelter, but other than that, you really don't need it for much more and it really can't buy you, or take the place of true happiness.

I think having enough money to survive and get buy is perhaps better than having an excess of wealth because you will never be satisfied with what you already have and thus you will never be happy. So that is just my standpoint on the matter. Once again, you make another one of these awesome threads

I suppose it depends on what "money" means.

Take the example of some small isolated cultures in african, like some Bushmen groups (mostly in the mid 1900s, but even today, there is still some small groups that live similar to how they used to). Some had no money, litarally. All they do is hunt and farm and enjoy each other's company.

Some might argue that they still have "money", as their farm produce and hunted meat is needed their. But even then, there is very very little trading, it's more of a communistic approach where no one owns anything, if you kill an animal to eat, it belongs to the small tribe, and you happily all enjoy it together. The concept of owning and having wealth is not something they caould easily grasp when they did come in contact with other cultures.

My answer to this would be yes, you can be happy without money. As long as you have company and are happy with what comes your way, a lack of money really can't get you down.

Considering that some of those problems you stated are caused by money, yes happiness can be achieved with no money. When you have no money you cant really worry about a lot of things. For example you cant worry about bills because you dont have any bills to pay! So while money can get rid of some problems having no money can get rid of most problems.

Money by itself will not make you happy, but for some reason its nicer to cry in a Mercedes than a Honda.

Of course you can be happy without money.

You're asking yourself whether or not a person or not can be satisfied in modern society without money. Chances are probably not. To simply put it, in a society that revolves around class over everything (tradition, religion, etc.) you can't expect to be that well off without money. Now that's a generalization, I'm sure there are people that are happy but not doing as well off economically (in places like suburbs, country land, etc.)  but the thing is that how can you expect natural happiness in a stressful environment (cities) that pretty much requires money everywhere you go.

The whole money and happiness argument isn't as complicated as it sounds. The need of money relies on the environment in which you can say it's just a factor of happiness. Having money to buy happiness is just a thing modern society has placed among civilians to actually get them to believe that. It's a harsh reality for those who believe in it and a lie to those who don't. Naturally you have to buy everything, but who needs money when you're content with what you've got? Happiness is a general emotion that's different for everyone so the answers/opinions you get are endless.

it is a proven fact that people with more money are happier. But yes, you can be poor and be happy.

Yes, you can be happy without money. However, it's easier to be happy when you are more secure financially.

It really depends on the character of the specific person and what makes them happy.

If you're a wealthy philanthropist who is happy seeing how his/her money helps others, then you got happiness from the money. Your money didn't literally buy you happiness, but it did the next best thing.

If you're extremely poor, you might get happiness from the kindness of others. You may not like your situation, but you've accepted it and feel happy that others care.

So, while I agree with the phrase that "Money can't buy you happiness", I only do so for it's literal sense (money can't buy "anger" or "love").
