Yes this is true recently... people are complaining that the Washington Redskins name is offensive and it should be changed and I would like to know your take on rather if the name should be changed or not or if it's even offensive at all .

Me personally I find trying to get the Redskins to change their team name because it has recently came off as offense to Native Americans to be quite idiotic considering it wasn't meant to be offensive nor has it been used in a offensive way and the teams name has been the Redskins for decades so why is the teams name a issue now and further more why is the name offensive to Native Americans now?, why would they have waited decades to come out and say its a offensive title and it needs to be changed.  

I have to agree with you, Divine, its just silly. Why is it that after all this time the Redskins, having played football for years, have the logo and name going for them all of a sudden become offensive. Why should they change their name now after having it trademarked for so long and no one said a word?

To me I feel like whomever is getting "offended" by it are trying to get something out of it but that is my personal belief. No one speaks up or gripes about something being offensive unless it really really is offensive and we can all see that or its something stupid like this. When its something stupid like this...my mind tells me someone might be trying to get something out of this.

I also agree with you. People are just overly sensitive these days about everything. In my opinion, the name should not be changed. If people were truly offended by the name, they should have spoken up a long time ago.

zerothesaint : I agree 100% most likely they are trying to sue the team for some type of monetary gain and they have yet to explain how the title "Redskins" even offends Native Americans, I could see if the title offended one of tribes or tribe leaders or even spiritual advisers  but it doesn't and personally I fail to see how the title even relates to Indians other than the logo for the team. 

Divine Aurora : The only thing I can see as to how it would be offensive to Native Americans is because "Red" was used as a slur ages ago to describe said people or at least an individual. "Red" is, I guess, considered a racial slur due to the skin color of Native Americans usually being tan for the most part..at least that's what I believe it being. Since the last post I decided to look into it a bit just to see HOW it could be offensive. What I just mentioned about "Red" is probably the number one reason since its picking out Native Americans via skin tone I guess.

But then again it all comes back to this: why did anyone speak up before? Why wait now to get all angry and throw a hissy fit? The team has been named so for years and not a single cry for injustice had been made by any  one until now. Its crazy. The best thing I could find about the name origin is because the Redskin originally started out as the Boston Braves, going with an Indian theme because of the MLB Braves. Due to financial issues way later the name was changed the Redskins and the team moved around before finally settling in Washington. They pretty much just changed their name so there wasn't conflict with the baseball team.

So they never did it due to history or anything..they just thought the Indian theme from the Braves was cool and wanted to join in on that and then the evolution of the name. But now people are getting all flustered because they think it means something awful or its slamming a certain type of people. Which of course is not the intention. 

Man people get butthurt over the simplest of things if they believe they can exploit it...

Well that is dumb. I don't like this whole thing because of the whole thing about it being respectful. I don't see the reason why everyone one doesn't like the name. It just annoys me.

You all act like its just become an issue.

The natives, and even white americans, have long campaigned for the name change.
And given the fact its a racial slur, as well as the fact almost every native opposes it, they really ought to.
And isnt their emblem an indian? So its no coincidence.

Why would they want to change there name, that sounds like a pretty dumb idea if you ask me. I've been use to the name redskins for a long time so it'll be tough for me if they changed there name.

Here is a broad question to all of you.
If i made a team called the new york n*****s would that be acceptable?
What if none of the players were even black?
If i had a random black man painted on the uniforms?
Assumedly ifthis team had already ezistedfor say, a hundred years it would then be acceptable.
Native americans have suffered every indignity, shuttled round like cattle from reservation to reservation, removed from their ancestrol lands, murder, rape, denied citizen ship until 1924.
Foreigners, in their own land.

And yet renaming a team with a name they find to be derogitory, thats too much of an indignity to you?

I'm not really sure on why the Redskins wants to change their names because it's making fun of Native Americans, the team has been around since how long, and they're finally mentioning something about it, so in a way, They're just a little sensitive with the name, maybe they're more honoring them than insulting them.
