I'll be joining the military soon as a helicopter/pneumatics mechanic. I'm a bit nervous because I've never worked as a mechanic on anything before, let alone aircraft. I will, of course, get a full course on becoming one and I'll be around experienced people.
I'm just curious whether I should ask to change my job even though there wasn't anything that looked better for me or just stick with this.

Don't get me wrong, it does look like something I want to do and the pay's great. I simply don't want to rush into something that might not be for me.
Any advice, especially from people with any sort of armed forces experience would be appreciated.

I joined the Marines to fight for my country and stand up to the threats both foreign and domestic.

You should really think about why you're doing this.  At some point you'll be in a foreign country with people throwing mortars at you, trying to kill you.  Helicopters are a high value target and the bad guys would like to destroy them whenever the get a chance.  If you're 'not sure' about joining a group that may have you fight, kill, and possible die, you should back out.  I went in knowing I could get blown up.  You should accept it and charge forward.

I'm not worried about that. I'm fine with putting my life on the line, it will give me the direction I need in life. I'm sure about the military, I just want to make sure I chose the right job so I don't weigh down the people around me.

That is great dude how does it fill to finally be serving for your own country?
Don't be nervous what you are doing is a very heroic thing to do and I'm sure people will appreciate you for helping your country out.
I guess this is your final decision I suppose I will be rooting for you!

That's awesome. I hope you serve your country and get noticed for your hard work.

Now, if you're not sure about becoming a certain job in the military, you should be careful. Try to join something you have experienced before, so you don't weigh down others --
Or yourself.

I think it's something you should be sure of before joining. Think of the moral implications of what you are doing. You are 'serving your country' by killing other people who are serving theirs. You will be directly involved and partly responsible for war and armed conflicts that make this wold the violence place it is.

I know you've thought this through, but remember to always look at the big picture.

I'll be working on helicopters, not killing anyone. Also, I don't think it's fair to assume the armed forces don't have these things you pointed out weighing on them every day they're out in action.

Well I personally spent 8 years in the Marines myself. Honestly any job you choose to pursue is what you make of it.  The work your doing is important yes, especially if you have the skills and aptitude for it.  The bottom line however is the people you serve with,  Those are the bonds that will stay with you for a life time, regardless of whether you make a career out of it, or if your only there for a single term.

Quite honestly in my opinion being an aircraft mechanic is a good MOS to be in,  it takes a lot of training but its a good one to have.  However its really up to you in the end. Remember its about serving with honor and distinction, and the people you serve with. I'll never forget the men and women I served with, still talk to many of them today and I took off my uniform about 10 years ago.

I wish you well however and thank you for standing up to serve our country.

That's really cool! I'm not sure about joining the military myself though. But being a mechanic sounds like fun. All you'll really be doing is fixing things, although you might still be in danger though...But good luck in doing that! The army needs people like you, no doubt.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.
