My old laptop had its screen died and because I have a urgent need of a computer, I decided to get a new one to replace it. I am in the process of transferring my files onto my new computer (with a monitor connected). What I am wondering is what I should do with the old computer that is most beneficial? Laptops cost a lot and I would like to be able to get something back for my old laptop, whether if it is selling for money, or be able to reuse them for something else. I don't really want to have a laptop that is partially broken left at my home when I know I won't be using it anymore, but at the same time, I don't want to just throw it in the trash while getting nothing back.

Did the computer have any worthwhile power behind it? You could possibly sell the parts. Depends on if it was all integrated into the laptop or not. Not sure on prices, but RAM simply isn't worth a lot of money when compared to anything else.

Lots of towns have electronic recylcing places, and there's tons of people on websites like Craigslist who are always looking for broken computers and stuff. Of course you can always save it for parts in case your new one has a problem.

Get the hard disk and use it as an external hard disk. Then sell the other parts, you really don't have any other use for those aside from using them as back up spare parts and it really isn't wise to keep those parts unless they're one of those current high end parts. It's better to sell them before they become completely invaluable.

Oh man, a laptop with a broken screen is a godsend! You can do anything with it! Take it apart and pull the screen out, find the model number and order a new one. Put it back together and blammo, not only does your laptop work again, but you've learned a skill! One you can actually use to turn a profit! Or heck, if that doesn't float your boat, pull the battery out, plug it into a wall outlet and use it as a headless server. I had a netbook die and I used it as a web server for a while, and briefly as a minecraft server (Don't do this, Minecraft is a horribly unoptomized game and will cripple your internet connection!).

You can use it as a test bed for all sorts of things. Anything you ever wanted to learn to do with a computer, this is the time. Go get a soldering iron and take the chips out, then put them back in. Find an old NES that doesn't work anymore and throw the board in there, just for fun! Heck, if nothing else, set it as a file server so everyone in your house can access your movies and music without having to leave your main PC on all the time.

The possibilities are only limited by your imagination and your desire to learn. Go out and find something cool to do. Make a robot, program an artificial intelligence, or simply contribute to folding@home. Just have fun with it.

You can try to sell it how it is, but I don't know if anyone will buy it. You can try to fix it and then sell it, or try to fix it and give it as a gift. You can sell the parts, like others have said. You can throw it out the window and become famous on YouTube.

I would just keep it, and try to fix it. If you end up breaking it more, then toss it in the trash, and buy a new one. I will gve you money for a new one.

If it still works fine with the exception of the screen, you could always sell the parts or sell the computer itself. Just be sure to inform people of the broken screen if you do end up selling it.

I save it and I don't throw it away. I keep it for guests like my friends to use when they're over. Also, it's nice to have a back-up computer in case your new one breaks, even if it is slightly damaged. It depends on how damaged it is, though.

Theres places online that will pay you to sell them your used/broken electronics. You might not get a ton of cash depending on the condition, but something is better than nothing.

If my computer breaks down, i leave it in my basement to gather dust. I might come down every once in a while to look at it, though.

I dont know if you have done anything with it yet, but since it isnt closed yet ill just run with no.
A broken monitor is really not that big of a deal. Frankly, assuming you have no computing expertise at all, you could probably manage to fit a new one yourself with the help of youtube.
Or you could sell it as it is, if its decent you shouldnt have a problem. If its not you should still be able to make at least $40.
Or as stated you can strip and sell it.
You might even be able to add the ram to your new one depending on the model.
I wouldnt sell the harddrive though, not unless you bleach it. There are people out there that pick up old harddrives just on the offchance theres something interesting on it.
