Good day fellow Vizzed members.

When I was attempting to make my Underrated sports thread, I couldn't decide if I should add Cheerleading. I then remembered that there is a huge debate as to whether Cheerleading is a sport. I read somewhere a couple of years ago about how some colleges when attempting to cut back funds to sports; they tend to cut money for the Cheerleading side and say that Cheerleading isn't a sport. Here is what both sides argue...

On the Pro-Cheerleading side; they say that Cheerleading requires the person to train and maintain their body. Cheerleading also requires practice to get some of the cheers and moves correct. Cheerleading also requires teamwork (especially if your doing a pyramid). There is also a risk of injury with Cheerleading as a Cheerleader could be injured practicing or doing the cheer event

On the Anti-Cheerleading side; they say that Cheerleaders don't face as much of an injury as a Football player, Soccer player, or Baseball player. They also say that Cheerleading also doesn't have a "score" or any sort of competition between other Cheerleading teams. They also point out that most Cheerleading doesn't require any talent or training as its only clapping your hands, dancing, and reciting chants. They also say that Cheerleading doesn't have national sports teams like Football, Basketball, Soccer, etc.

Both sides make a decent case, so I figure this would be a good topic for the Sports page (and if it gets moved, then we know a Cheerleading thread doesn't belong in the Sports forum). So...

Do you guys think Cheerleading is a sport (Competitive Cheerleading and/or the type of Cheerleading you see on Football games, High School games, etc).

Nope, my sister and I argue about it all the time, to me its an activity. Just like bowling, fishing, skiing, and playing poker; none off these are sports either.

I think cheerleading isn't a sport because sports usually have dudes only.

I think it is a sport. You exercise to do the sport and it takes a lot of practice and hard work. Why don't you tryout for yourself? lol

Cheerleading requires strength, skill, teamwork, athleticism, practice, and coaching.  I don't know how it is any different from any other sport.  It does not have an objective scoring system, but neither does gymnastics, figure skating, or other artistic sports.

If you don't think gymnastics is a sport than cheerleading is not a sport.  I believe cheerleading takes a lot out of a person and is as much a team sport as any other out there, with the exception of basketball.

I do believe it's a sport. At least the competitive kind. It takes tons of strength, teamwork, and everything like warmaker just said.  I can't really say it better then him. There are plenty of sports that you don't have a big chance of injury. If golf counts, then so does cheerleading.

That's debatable. I personally don't think so, but not the bad way. I think it's a great activity that cheers on sports. I don't think cheering for a sport is a sport. Again, it's debatable, and you may have a different opinion.

Personally, I say no. My definition of a sport is: "An athletic competition in which one person or team's performance directly affects another person or team's performance." Examples: Baseball. The pitchers and fielders directly affect if the batter gets a base hit or not. You get the idea.

Really, I think that it is. It has all the aspects of any other so called 'Sport' so I don't really see any reason on why it isn't .

tgags123 : Okay you could make an argument for most of his sports that he listed. But by your definition that you gave then bobsledding should also be a sport since if 1 person on the sled team doesn't push the sled then the sled might not have enough speed to get through the course. Not to mention if the person who is steering the sled doesn't do his job, then that could be a problem.

Good on you, man.

Cheer leading is not a sport because it would be silly if cheer leading was a sport and cheer leading is only for girls and if you are a girl this would be fun cheering for players

breeze28 : There are boys that cheer as well, you know.   Besides, not all sports are played only by men, nor do they have to be.

Me myself?  I have to say I don't view it as a sport.  A competition maybe... but not a sport.  I rather liked tgag's definition of sport.  I thought it was very well put and I think I agree. (I might think of an example which debunks it, but off the top of my head, I'd agree)

Yeah I basically see it as a competitive , and it also is an encouragement/ competition sort of thing. I mean you practice for it and you train to be good at it and there is a lot of effort and teamwork put into being good at it. But would I classify it as a sport? No. I just don't think it requires the same. That doesn't mean that it doesn't take hard work or practice to be good at it, because it does, but I just wouldn't classify it as being a sport. That is just my opinion on it.

I am glad that you are sticking by your opinion and what you think on the matter no mater what anyone else says. Good for you man
