When I was little, we used to buy a certain kind of chewing gum / bubblegum called "Chappies" a lot.  You got different fruity flavours of course and it had more or less a cubical shape, roughly 2cm x 2cm x 1cm in size with a wrapper around it.  Inside this wrapper, were all kinds of weird and wonderful facts and all the facts started with the question: "Did you know?"  That is where I got the idea for this thread from.

So what do I want to achieve with this?  The idea is to share bits of BIBLICAL facts and things pertaining to the Christian faith that you think people might not be aware of, or might not know about.  Even if it is something that some of us already know of, or have heard, you are welcome to share it.  The only condition is that if you state something as a fact, you have to give a solid reference for it, either (preferably) from the Bible or a trustworthy Christian resource.  Also, if you do not agree with the "Did you know?" statement, say why you don't agree.  Give reasons.  Don't just say, "I don't believe that", or "It's a bunch of junk" or something along those lines.  Even if it's something interesting / weird that you have heard during a sermon or at a conference or among friends or whatever, share it please, but just make it clear that you are not 100% sure about it's reliability.  You can also elaborate on your posted fact, giving background on where it came from instead of just posting the reference.

Now I am fully aware there are some that do not believe in the Bible and in Christianity in general, that does not mean you cannot take part in this.  So please do not run away!  Maybe you have a Christian friend that told you something interesting from his / her life that sounded pretty weird, or maybe you have read a Christian article or picked up the Bible one day and came across something that boggled your mind a bit.  Please share it, maybe someone can hopefully shed some light on the subject.

There is a certain "format" I am hoping to stick to, using the Chappies bubblegum wrapper as an example.  I would like (if possible) that every post must start off with "Did you know?" as your heading, followed by your "factual tidbit".  Example:

Did you know?
(more of a Biblical fact) "That according to Genesis 1 (or such and such a resource) , on the sixth day, God created dinosaurs."

OR

Did you know?
(general hearsay that links to the Bible) "That I have heard people say this and that about that particular Bible verse or this and that about the Age of the Earth."
In this case someone else can reply with proper evidence to make things a bit clearer or to bring it into perspective.

You get the idea?  The main goal with this is to "force" people to do the research for themselves and to pick up their Bibles and read it.  Don't just pick a statement out of the air and make it truth.  Check it out for yourself.  Ask questions.
I'll say again, this is focused on Biblical facts and the Christian life.  If you don't believe in these things, say so, but say why you say so, ok?

Allrighty then.  I'll go first.  I'll start off with a thread that has already been discussed on this site.  No, I'm not lazy My time is just a bit limited right know and it's just to get things warmed up.  In this case I'll just post links to my references.

Did you know?
That according to the Biblical time line, the earth is only about 6000 years old.
Check out  this thread , first post at top of page, where I posted in more detail how the above figure was reached.  Like I said, my time right now is a bit limited and it's quite a mouthful, so sorry about the link.  I'll try and do better with my next post

Did you know that there are 42 generations between Jesus and Abraham? You can find the proof here. Particularly in verse 17, you can do the math. There are fourteen between Abraham and David, fourteen between David and the deportation to Babylon, and fourteen between Babylon and Jesus. I think it's funny when there are those who say the answer to life is 42. Every time I see it on Facebook, I bring up this fact and will say, "Technically, you're right."
Another tidbit that goes along with the genealogy of Jesus: David impregnated the wife of Uriah the Hittite and had him killed, since he wouldn't lay with his wife (in order to hide that David impregnated her). Even though David repented of this, God punished him by taking that child, but they had another child named Solomon, who is in Jesus's lineage. At least to me, it shows me the redemptive power of Jesus even before Jesus walked the Earth. It's really cool.

pray75 :  Nice one.  Think I've found another idea for a shirt

Did you know?

That by carefully reading the text in Genesis, you would find that the Flood lasted approximately a year.

The chronology goes as follow:

*Genesis 7:4 - 40 days of rain

*Genesis 7:24 - 110 more days of water that stayed on the earth.  Total of 150 days

*Genesis 8:5 - 74 more days before the mountains could be seen (from the 17th day of the seventh month to the 1st day of the tenth month: 13 + 30 + 30 + 1)

*Genesis 8:6-7 - 40 days went by before Noah sent out a raven

*Genesis 8:8 - another 7 days before Noah sent out the dove for the 1st time

*Genesis 8:10 - another 7 days before Noah sent out the dove for the second time

*Genesis 8:12 - When Noah sent out the dove for the final time, another 7 days passed

*Genesis 8:13 - 29 days elapsed to correlate with the date of 601st year, 1st month, 1st day

*Genesis 8:14-16 - 57 days passed before Noah and the animals got off the Ark

371 days in total

Brigand :

Nice one Brigand  This is actually a blessing in disguise, because now I can add some more content It was kind of a noobish move of mine when I thought I could reply to my own posts, only to realise that this forum restricts you to do that, hence the dormant thread.

Some of you might know this, but here's something interesting about the Bible.

Total Chapters in the Bible = 1189
Chapters in the Old Testament = 929
Chapters in the New Testament = 260
Longest Chapter = Psalms 119
Shortest Chapter = Psalms 117
Middle Chapter = Psalms 118
Chapters before Psalm 118 = 594 Chapters
Chapters after Psalm 118 = 594 Chapters
Add the Chapters up = 1188 (594+594)+1(Middle Chapter)=1189.
Middle Verse = Psalms 118:8.
Psalm 118:8 = "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man."

Did you know?

All of Paul's letters are signed with ''grace to you'' at the end. That was his signature.  For proof, read all the Pauline epistles and you will find out .

redeemedgirl :

Jip.  Also, all of his epistles starts with, "Grace to you and peace..."
BTW, Welcome to Christian Conservatives!

The Bible hasn't always been divided into chapters and verses.  The system of chapters was introduced in A.D. 1227 by Cardinal Hugo de S. Caro.  The verse notations were added in 1551 by Robertus Stephanus after the advent of printing and the first translation of the English Bible was started by John Wycliffe and completed by John Purvey in 1380.
Another interesting fact - A bible in the University of Gottingen is written on 2470 palm leaves!
The Bible devotes 500 verses on prayer, less than 500 verses on faith, but over 2000 verses on money and possessions.

Thank you Sol@r . I can't imagine reading without chapters and verses....can you imagine how it would be during a church service? ''Now everyone, let's turn to that part of the book of John where Jesus tells people to repent'' ?I'm sure ?the sermons would last way longer due to everyone looking for the scripture. haha

Did you know?
Nebucchadnezzar, king of Babylon, ?was punished by God and  He took away ?his sanity ?and ?made him live like a beast for ? seven years, till he recognized the sovereignty and dominion of God. (Daniel:25-34)

redeemedgirl :

Maybe they should have left the chapters and verses.  That would force you to know your Bible, top of your head

Did you know, the word "God" appears in every book of the Bible except for Song of Solomon and Esther.
Also, the word "trinity" does not appear in the Bible.

I actually did not know either of those facts, SoL@R.  How interesting!  Thank you very much for sharing all this info.  I'm not a whiz on bible facts at all so I can't offer much to the discussion. However, I wanted to let you know that I always read this thread. So thank you for taking the time to do this.

Here's some scientific facts found in the Bible.  So skeptics, take note

*The earth free-floats in space affected only by gravity.
Job 26:7 - "He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing."
While other sources declared the earth sat on the back of an elephant or turtle, or was held up by Atlas, the Bible alone states what we now know to be true - "He hangs the earth on nothing."

*Creation is made of particles, indiscernible to our eyes
Hebrews 11:3 - "By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible."
Not until the 19th century was it discovered that all visible matter consists of invisible elements.

*The Bible specifies the perfect dimensions for a stable water vessel
Genesis 6:15 - "And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits."
Ship builders today are well aware that the ideal dimension for ship stability is a length six times that of the width. Keep in mind, God told Noah the ideal dimensions for the ark 4,500 years ago.

SoL@R :  I like where you're going with this and wish I had MY bible with me. (I have two here in the classroom, actually... never go anywhere without a bible!  But it's not MINE with resources and articles and notes.)

What about things like the bible discussing currents under the ocean waters?  All these things you mentioned and more... were written long before they were scientifically discovered.  I wonder why so many people ignore this astounding fact.

Singelli :

It comes down to one word, accountability

Here's the one that you mentioned Singelli :

*Ocean currents anticipated.
Psalm 8:8 - "The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas."
Three thousand years ago the Bible described the "paths of the seas." In the 19th century Matthew Maury - the father of oceanography - after reading Psalm 8, researched and discovered ocean currents that follow specific paths through the seas! Utilizing Maury's data, marine navigators have since reduced by many days the time required to traverse the seas.

and here's some more...

*When dealing with disease, clothes and body should be washed under running water.
Leviticus 15:13 - "And when he who has a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing, wash his clothes, and bathe his body in running water; then he shall be clean."
For centuries people naively washed in standing water. Today we recognize the need to wash away germs with fresh water.

*Sanitation industry birthed.
Deuteronomy 23:12-13 - "Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse."
Some 3,500 years ago God commanded His people to have a place outside the camp where they could relieve themselves. They were to each carry a shovel so that they could dig a hole (latrine) and cover their waste. Up until World War I, more soldiers died from disease than war because they did not isolate human waste.

*Oceans contain springs.
Job 38:16 - (God speaking) "Have you entered the springs of the sea?  Or have you walked in search of the depths?"
The ocean is very deep. Almost all the ocean floor is in total darkness and the pressure there is enormous. It would have been impossible for Job to have explored the "springs of the sea." Until recently, it was thought that oceans were fed only by rivers and rain. Yet in the 1970s, with the help of deep diving research submarines that were constructed to withstand 6,000 pounds-per-square-inch pressure, oceanographers discovered springs on the ocean floors!

*There are mountains on the bottom of the ocean floor.
Jonah 2:5-6 - "The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head.  I went down to the moorings of the mountains;  The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;  Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God."
Only in the last century have we discovered that there are towering mountains and deep trenches in the depths of the sea.
