There is no point getting a PSP any more, and a PSP is somewhat of a poor system. If you want a PSP, you would be better getting a PSVita. The current best and monopolising handheld is the 3DS which is far better than the PSVita.
You can't really compare Home Consoles with Handhelds as they have completely different purposes and you can't really say which is better. When it comes to game systems, it's best to get the one with more games that you like/want to play.

If you want to get a Handheld console don't get a PSP.
Better choices are the normal consoles, You should get a PS4, Xbox One or a Wii-U.
And if you really want a handheld console you should get a 3DS; Best Handheld there is at the moment.

Me personally I prefer handheld's to consoles because you can take a handheld on the go for long and boring car rides, and they are just more convenient for me. But the consoles do have better graphics and more lengthy video games stage wise and story plot line wise.

Also, you can be all snug and cozy under your blanket with them - personal experience with the GBA. I like these close up as I've bad eyesight, so handhelds would comfort me in that way. To be honest, handhelds are more slick and more controllable than the actual full-on consoles and you can react quicker to the game. However, handhelds such as the PSP can be annoying the way that the analog can make the game harder and the overall layout of the buttons.

I have a nintendo 3ds now and I take it everywhere with me because they are smaller and easier to carry than big consoles. I do like both Handhelds and Consoles because it really depends on what I'm in the mood for, I play on a PS3, the Wii, and the DS. and with 2 consoles and one handheld, I have to say I'm more favorable to consoles, but that doesn't mean I don't like handhelds.

Definitely consoles. I prefer the bigger screen and  if the game is being released on console and handheld I will choose console. That being said the handhelds have some pretty good games, that consoles don't have.
