I struggle in math a lot. I try to do my best, as in I do the homework every night and pay close attention in class but I still have a hard time of getting it to come to me. Anyways, today in class, we were doing equations for parabolas. I didn't know how to get the vertex's Y value (I do know now after trial and error). I raised my hand and asked him the question about how you go about doing that. He then tells me to ask the people who were sitting beside me. They didn't know either (They were both away for some days and were trying to get caught up). I told him that we didn't know and all he says is "wow" in an insulting tone. He didn't bother to help us either. He is usually a quite teacher and would not act in that way, but still, was it right for him to act this way towards his students?

A wise instructor told me to not get in the way of teaching.

To this day I still respect that rule.
Believe it or not but your life may depend on this one day.

Like say... you wake up on a plane that only has enough fuel to last 30 minutes.
No Pilot.
No Passengers.
No Bail-out Parachutes.
The radio is gone.
The Pedals and Stick are sabotaged.
The ability to program a flight path is still optional.
Cell phone is busted.
You automatically have to pray you remember everything your math teachers taught you to get out of that situation.

Jokes Aside....

Pay close attention.
If you did not need it? It would not be taught.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.
I'm Out.

Yes. It was a small comment, but if said in a condescending tone, it was wrong of him. Teachers are supposed to instruct, not belittle. However, I would recommend you try to ignore it, as the things he teaches are important, and you wouldn't want to let a grudge hinder your learning in his class. He probably had a bad day, and made the mistake of letting it get him in a foul mood with his students. Not that I'm defending him on it, he was wrong if he said it in a belittling manner.

I don't think this thread technically should be placed in this forum. I'm thinking more in the "School" forum, but I'll still answer the question.

I think you need to take a look at it both ways. Your teacher might not know the whole situation and he would be wrong to make such a reaction with your classmates being absent in previous days. At the same time, if your classmates were not absent, it would look quite disappointing to the teacher to see that the group close to each other in his class would not know what was taught from before, though I would disapprove the way he expressed it.

Personally, I would suggest talking to your teacher after class one on one with your concerns and explaining the situation so that he can have a better idea.

It wasn't really wrong at all. If anything, to get upset about such a thing is just plain being over sensitive, really, Nya~.

If you don't understand it, were you paying attention? Did you take notes, and if so, why not read them over again? Do you often not understand the concept of situations? Do you have a low grade? (70's - 80's range)

There are many different circumstances that could have made him say it. Maybe he said it not to insult you and the others, but in realization that either: A) He might be doing something wrong in lectures, or B) A good portion of the class is probably doing poorly at their own fault, Nya~.

If we all felt that stuff like this was being rude to a concerning point like this, we'd have a lot less teachers working. Heck, 90% of my High School last year would be ridden of teachers.

When things like this happen, you don't blame the teachers, but instead consider the fact that you yourself might be doing something wrong, Nya~.

MegaRevolution1 : Whether or not MoblinGardens was doing something wrong does not excuse the action the teacher chose to took. It was completely out of line for him to make such a comment, and the fact that he chose not to help them to understand the concept is unacceptable. What a lot of people do not understand is that building a foundation is absolutely vital for the continuation of education. Here's what I mean:

Teacher teaches addition. Student doesn't understand addition. The foundation is not set.
Teacher teaches multiplication. Student cannot comprehend multiplication. The foundation crumbles.

Because the teacher has not adequately taught the students the foundation, more complex topics were essentially impossible to learn. You cannot understand multiplication without understanding addition, because multiplication is simply compounding addition. It is likely that MoblinGardens is struggling because there was a foundational issue that didn't stick right, and because of that, things become a bit more difficult. Part of it could be the way the curriculum is being forced down teachers' and students' throats, but it is also on the teacher to understand that not all student will understand everything. If it was really that big of an issue, the teacher should have asked to see him after class or made arrangements to meet with him rather than act in a condescending tone. There is never a reason to talk down to your students, as this can have an adverse affect on some of them.

MoblinGardens : At the same time, don't worry about that guy. If he's usually not like that, then brush it off. Chances are there is something going on behind the scenes with him, and in that particular moment, he was unable to separate his problems from that specific situation. Forgiveness is always the best policy, but if it becomes a problem, I suggest you speak with him in private or have your parents do so. I'm sure it wasn't anything nefarious, but it's always best to pay attention and see if there is a pattern so you can handle it if need be.
