First off I didn't actually shoot myself in the foot, I was just using a metaphor to describe my little problem going on.

Anyways I'm just about done with my second to last year of community college and I'm worried that I won't be able to transfer next year as I think I've ruined my chances of transfering. Heres the situation...

I'm taking the following courses this semester...

Microeconomics
Business Law
Psychology
Philosophy
Public Speaking.

Now heres the problem...

I'm failing 3 of the those classes (Micro, Psych, and Public Speaking). Or I believe that I am failing these courses.

My Public Speaking teacher even told me that he thinks that my grade isn't going to be good; since I didn't deliever 2 out of the 4 speeches that are done in class (the one that I did do I got an A on it and I know that my Final Speech which is 25% of my grade I will get an A.) But even then I don't know how my grade will shape up for that course. That and I forgot to do 66% of the homework that is done online. I'm most likely going to get a D in the course, but I think that I can maybe get a C.

For Psychology I'm just trying to scratch out a D in the course. As of right now I'm at a 64 with 1 test, 1 case study, and my final exam to go. Now while I do good on the tests (for the most part, I average around the C+ - B range); I've been unable to get higher then a 60 on my case studies. I've tried my hardest on 3 of the 4 case studies, but my grades didn't come out as I hoped it would be (the last one I BSed, but it turns out that I did better on that one then my previous 3 case studies.) And I should mention that my final exam is just an essay, which is mostly likely going to be formatted the same as the case studies. So I'm worried as to how I'm going to do on that since its worth a good amount of points which is what I'm going to need if I want a D (if I score an A, then maybe a shot at a C; but I doubt it.)

As for Micro...

I'm not going to suger coat it. I Screwed up BIG TIME. I pretty much failed the course. I can explain all the reasons why, but frankly it would just be me ranting. Don't get me wrong, I could have dropped the course; but I would rather that I "complete it" and say to my transfer consulers that I didn't give up. Not to mention most likely an F and an incomplete would be about the same on my transcript.

As for the rest of my courses I pretty much have an A in Business Law (pending another test and final, but pretty much a B+), and an B in Philosophy (which I raised from a D).

Now I will say this in my defense so that way most people don't think that I'm lazy (which I am). Out of previous 10 courses that I took for my First Year of college. 8/10 of them I scored either an A or B. (I should say B+, but the college I go to doesn't do + or - letter grades so my B+ goes down to a B). The other two I got a C in Geology and a D in Precalclus, which is my only bad grades. My GPA just going off that was about a 2.6 (which isn't terrible, but I kind of got screwed since the Geology and Precalclus had a higher credit hour number, so they had more wieght on my GPA compared to all my A's and B's.) I was even a couple of points away from making Honor Role on my first semester (I missed the mark by .27)

Now if what I believe that is happening with my grades...*sighs*

I'll get a 1.8 GPA this semester *hides in shame* (This was done just do my midterms...which was 1 A, 1 C, and 3 Ds, its subject to change, but I won't know till after Christmas).

I should mention that the college I want to attend next year usually requires a 2.5 GPA to be considered and I plan on taking to the transfer office to see what I have to do next semester in order to increase my chances. But I'm really worried that they will say that there is no way that I can make the requirements to be considered for the admission consideration (or at least that they will require that I "climb a mountain that I know I can't climb.")

Now next semester I hope will get better as I'm taking 3 law courses and I've always/close to always had an A in those courses. But I'm taking a religion course and Sociology also and I don't have a clue on what they will require me to do (well the religion course is an easy one and my Philosophy teacher will be my religion teacher also, so I know what his class is like.)

So to but an end to my ranting (gone on long enough)...

What should I do? and do you think I've dug a hole that I won't be able to climb out of?

(If this is in the wrong forum, then please move it as I really want the feedback.)

*winces* It definitely sounds like you have quite the dilemma there. My advice would be to seek your counselor or course adviser (you do have one, right?) and ask what can be done, since they will know the programs a lot better.  Every location is different, so any advice we can give here isn't guaranteed to be the advice you should be taking.

Raising your GPA from a 1.8 to a 2.5 in so little time seems almost impossible, I'm afraid to say... especially in your predicament. My guess is that you will have to take another semester of 'filler courses' to bring your GPA back up before applying to the new program.  I'm pretty sure your college isn't going to just dump you and wish you good luck.  They have some way to get everyone out of their holes, because they want the money.

Singelli : Thank you for the reply.

My counselors at the community college haven't been helpful at all. I've had to switch majors because of issues involving what is classified under a "liberal arts degree." So I can't really rely on them and I would prefer to talk too someone at the 4 year college as they kind hold the faith of my education in their hands (to a certain degree). And they kind of already know my delema as they've sent me mail telling me that I might lose my Federal Aid Loans if I don't improve (which is most likely going to happen...but I think that will happen next year as all of my financial aid amount is still on my bill for next semester.)

I'm somewhat confident that I can get a 2.5 GPA as I've said before the Law courses are second hand nature to me so I know that I can get at least an A or no lower then a B. The Religion course will vary, but since I know the teacher, know how he does tests, and his teaching style; I'm well prepared to get a better grade in that course. Sociology is a tossup.

Oldschool41 : True about the four year college I think.  I know my own adviser was HORRID.  She never helped me, was snide, and pretty much left me to figure things out on my own. Then, on top of things, her lack of help caused me to graduate a whole semester later than I should have.

I forgot that you had another semester coming up, and I was only considering this one and the time remaining in it.  I think you can do it too then, but that it's going to take a lot of work, as you stated.

Oldschool41 : I can relate to that. The correspondence school that I am enrolled in has a no D for course grade rule and I’m still in the introduction part of the course. Right now I have a D- and have to do a math lesson and reading comprehension and such. It has me really rethinking things and stalling in regard to the math end of it. I have been thinking of withdrawing from the program and trying again for a GED but I haven’t made my mind up yet.

What irritates me is I’m good with the reading comprehension and other things like vocabulary and English and such but they aren’t really giving me much of a chance to show what I can do. So in essence I feel like I am being shot in the foot before I even get started. Along with other things that I am dealing with it is depressing. I’m hoping that I will be able to find my way sooner or later. Sometimes it feels like I’m spinning my wheels etc.

My advice would be to talk to whomever you can in terms of teachers and or higher ups in order to give yourself perspective. As for me I’m pretty much on my own so I am in a bit of a different dilemma in some ways.

Best of luck to you.

Update: I ended up getting a C in Psychology. To be honest, I'm SHOCKED. What gave me the C was scoring an 84 on my Final which counts for 25% of the grade.

I bombed my Micro Final so I know that I failed that class.

I just have to hope that Public Speaking is around the C grade and that I maintained my A in Business Law and B in Philosophy.

I'll post what I got when the grades come in.

I always feel bad when people go through stuff like this, 'cause I can relate to feeling helpless over grades.

Anyway, I don't know how likely something like this is for you, but at my university they allow you to retake a class if you've failed it. Your second grade will replace the first when calculating your GPA. You can only do it a certain number of times, if they allow it, but it would definitely help.

One thing that is a little disconcerting, though, is that you may fail your public speaking class; especially since you said you only delivered half of the required speeches. Obviously no matter what you decide to do, it's going to require a substantial amount of work. A 2.5 GPA is just what you need to be considered. You'll want to beat the minimum by as much as possible, though.

No matter what you decide to do, I wish you luck. And I definitely look forward to seeing your updates and finding out how things go.

Edit: Final grades came out!!

Business law: B

Philosophy: C

Psychology: C

Public Speaking: D

Microeconomics: D

GPA for semester: 1.80

So there you go. Terrible I know. Some other facts I should point out...

GPA for college overall: 2.45 (Includes the 1.80)

So I'm .05 from the 2.5 mimimum to at least be considered

Next semester courses taking...

Procedural Criminal Law

Substantive Criminal Law

Children and the Law

Sociology

Comparative Religion

You guys think that I can rebound if that difficult schedule, particularly with the 3 Law courses? I don't want those "if you apply yourself, you'll do great" responses I want a straightfoward answer with explaination as to why you think I will/will not rebound.

I will summon all those who posted. You can chose to ignore my summon and not responded, yell at me, or whatever; I just wanted to give you can update.

mrfe : Yes I know. I posted on their user board comment sections as a reaction to the failed summons (can't summon during editing and I couldn't post another comment since I was the last person to post.)

I guess overall lesson for you: STUDY STUDY STUDY. Yes its super boring, but you got to study if you don't want to drop out.

Oldschool41 : yeah, you can do it. Three of my fillers in high school where law related, and where pretty easy. If you do your work, and study, you will be fine. You seem like a pretty smart man. What exact degree are you getting again? And maybe watching Nancy Grace or shows like that will help you.

mrfe : Lets see...

1. Don't join a faterity when your a freshmen. Ease into the college life as its an adjustment.

2. Pick a major your going to love. If you like it, your more then likely to stay in the major.

3. Pick classes you won't hate/get bored. I got bored and hated Geology, and I got a C in the class. I loved Political Science, got an A. My point pretty much in a nutshell.

4. Don't be scared with meeting new people. Your going to meet a lot of people you don't know, so don't be shy.

5. Join college clubs. I didn't and its going to look bad on my resume.

thing1: I'm a Political Science major. Thinking about getting into Law school. I'm pretty smart, I'm just kind of a "one-trick horse" as I don't do well in Science/Math classes and those classes is what killed my GPA early in my Freshman year (could have gotten a 3.4 at least if I didn't earn a C in Geology for my first semester and a D in Pre-Calculus in my second semester.)

Oldschool41 : Thanks!! I'm thinking that I want to be an euntrepenur (totally incorrect spelling, I know...), so I've got to find some classes to help me toward that dream. I'm not really a shy person, so meeting new peeps won't be an issue. I'm going to stop spamming this thread with me talk, so PM me if you want to continue the conversation. Again, thanks!

Thanks for the update.

It's hard to give you a straightforward answer, 'cause we can't really know. You could be the most brilliant person ever, but if you don't try you won't pass your classes. It really seems to be a matter of whether or not you can manage to keep yourself motivated and working throughout the semester. If you actually do the work and go to every class, then improving your GPA by .05 is very realistic. Of course, as I said before, you'd want to try to improve it by as much as possible.

PHEW!  Three law courses huh?  You're so close though, that I can't imagine you NOT meeting your requirement.  You don't exactly seem like the type to goof off and completely miss the mark in every class, so I think you're in the green zone.  That's not to say that you can completely relax of course, but I'm happy that you managed to be so close to the mark, really.

I just think you are going to be really, really stressed out this semester.  You're not going to be doing any clubs or anything on the side I hope?
