On Mario Kart 64, I would have to say Yoshi. On any of the other Mario Kart games, I tend to go with Mario since his stays are usually pretty well balanced.

I like a lot of the characters from each weight class:

for small I like to use toad because he is kind of fast I guess.

for medium I like mario, luigi, diddy kong and yoshi. I know daisy is supposed to be great because of her speed but to be honest, I have never used her and I am still fast without daisy.

For large I like bowser, dry bowser, king boo and funky kong is probably my favorite, he is really awesome and he is super fast on a flame runner. To be honest, I have only played Mario Kart Super Curcuit. I always liked using plain old mario. N64 I like the light-weights with their high acceleration. So I usually pick Yoshi...

I haven't played them all but it seems their is a misconception with the older games.... take the original for example, Yoshi and Toad are actually the slowest of the bunch. Sure they have great acceleration, but their top speed is nowhere close to that of Bowser or Donkey Kong.(Just don't get hit! Ha!)
