Let me first say that I believe that in the near future ([perhaps with the help of quantum computing) all science will find its way back to G-D. Its inevitable. Stephen Hawking has even admitted to the necessity for an Intelligent Designer.

Within the teachings of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), there are three parts to each soul: ruach, nefesh, and neshemah. Ruach is breath or vitality. Nefesh is G-D's Will within us. Neshemah is the highest part of the soul, a spark of Divinity. (These are interpreted variously, but this is from Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai as found in Sefer ha-Zohar.)

This corresponds with Freud's theory of the three states of the human psyche: id, ego, and super-ego. Id is animal instinct; ego is practical and day-to-day thought, super-ego consists of things like morality, and creative thought.

I know you asked for Christianity, but Kabbalah is a strain of Judaism, and of course Christianity is rooted within Judaism.

j0han :  I agree with you that all true science does and will continue to lead to God. It's inevitable.

As for the study of psychology, I don't think there's much overlap.  I do tend to have more extreme views than most people, but I'll explain the best that I can.  I wish here to quote my husband because he words it much better than I do, being a debater and all:

"I'm against psychology because A) it is a religion.  B) it operates in contradiction of God's Word. Those who founded Psychology founded it on the ideology that mankind are gods and that through learning our psychology we could become more powerful beings.

Psychology is atheistic in that it does not believe in the existence of a higher being (there is no greater God) and it denies the existence of absolute morals.

In other words, in true Psychology there is no right or wrong...only reasons for actions.

Hence why Psychologists are often used to deem a murderer "insane" to keep him off death row instead of providing him a punishment equal to his crime.

It is in contradiction to God's Word in that Psychology attempts to explain and know the thoughts of the heart/mind.  But, as scripture said, "The heart is deceitful and desparately wicked, who can know it"

In other words, in trying to "find ourselves" in trying to "know ourselves" we are deceived by it.  Our ways, in essense, are not our heart's ways. Our heart has its own motives which are in contradiction to ourselves and it seeks to control us.  Psychology claims it can understand that which the Bible says we can not know.

So, to follow Psychology is to in essence call God a liar."

Singelli : Are you saying Psychology is all bad? "Psychology" on it's own is a broad term, and to say that it's all an atheistic religion would certainly be extreme .

I'll agree with you where stuff like where we try to understand the human mind completely is crazy, that certainly would require for us to be God. But not all of the study of Psych is bad, you could look at it as exploring and admiring God's creation of our COMPLEX minds that we really won't be able to understand, which in itself is awe inspiring.

A person could go for a degree in counseling, and that would include Psychology, but a person could use that with God and they would be able to change lives.
