I myself prefer "Retro Gaming". Although games today may be fun with the new technology being implemented into their game play, I always find myself putting in more hours of gaming into older titles. I don't know if it's some kind of nostalgia factor, or if games today don't have that certain charm they used to. That's just what I think, so please give your opinions. Have fun!

I grew up on games from Atari, NES, and SNES.  Those ones are what I played when I was in my formative years so of course I'm going to like them more.  We only needed two buttons and the game lines were much more simplistic.  Now, you watch full movies by the time you play a game.  I don't know that all games need developed story lines (exception: Final Fantasy) but games now are either sports games or button-mashers for all intents and purposes.

I like the fact that the point of old games was to beat them.  We didn't have the unlockables, side quests, easy-play options, and multiple save points.  You had to earn a trip to the end of the game to see it through.  I think being handed all the information online with FAQs and skipping hard parts just cheats you out of an experience.

New games are shiny, tell stories, and have graphics more realistic than actual life, and let you play people around the world.

Old games were gritty, hard, and the cause of frustration.  I learned to deal with anger through the NES.

There are bad games and good games in each category. I guess I prefer modern games because they're really fun but not much more fun than retro ones. Either is good.

Too me modern games hold a bit of an advantage over Retro. But only because of the technology know a days allow video games not only to be challenging like the retro games but at the same time extremely visually stimulating.Retro's are still very good in area of originality. Since most games know days hold stories and plots from the old days. That's my opinion.

i love retro games, even though im from the newer generation. When i was 7, i used to play super nintendo and nintendo 64 all the time, because that is what we had. Same with pokemon games, because the music is better (i think), and its the classic graphics and main characters.

sirwaffle101 : I prefer retro games because the games were for one, harder to beat and extremely difficult to figure out.  Take the original Ninja Gaiden that game was long, with a whole (and good for its time) story and it gave you a lot of weapon options.  Game now a day are too easy (for marketing reason) and though you can do all kind of moves or tricks that don't make the games difficult.

I prefer Retro Gaming because I grew up playing the Nintendo 64 with my favourite Games like Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye 007. Retro Games were more fun, challenging and harder than Modern Games. Modern Games now have Motion Controls and I hate Motion Controls because say for an example if I used the Playstation Move, I go left or right to move sometimes I never move left or right or it does it for me for a few seconds which makes me get cross and angry. I just prefer the Classic Game Controllers because when I press a Button to jump, I jump as soon as I press the button. Modern Games are just about the Graphics now and not the Gameplay and that's the true weakness about Modern Games because the Graphics alone don't make a Game, it's the Gameplay!

Retro Gaming.

I grew up playing these with my dad and sister. I still play them, even if they are simple and some lack of good graphics... They deserve to be played.

By far, retro gaming. I didn't grow up in the 90's, but since I tried this site out I've noticed that it's way better than modern gaming. Newer games have been taken over by two things:

Guns

and

Guns

What happened to fun? People will get bored with shooting, shooting, shooting...

Retro gaming focuses on fun, modern gaming focuses on...guns.

I prefer retro games, there used to be a time where you got the whole game and didn't have ad-ons, map packs and all that crap, that just ended up costing more money then what you payed for it. But, I have to admit, some modern games are pretty good. Then again, you used to be able to buy a brand new game for 20 bucks, but now a new one is 60 to 70 bucks. There wasn't strict ESRB rules either. (which sucks) you got to produce an ID and the clerk would basically warn you are buying a mature rated game. (as if you didn't know that)

Modern gaming or retro gaming? I am a fan of both
but, i'm a much bigger fan of retro gaming because
it had a good feeling when you played with it. The
retro games had creativity back then.

Awesome background there Waffle.

But i don't think I could go back to playing classic games and enjoy them like I do my JRPGs. I enjoy the anime cutscenes, tons of story, and the full out CD quality music.  This is not to say that I don't enjoy playing retro games sometimes, but I need my arresting plot.

I'm a plot person. I like my story lines and so do I prefer modern gaming. Retro gaming has it's charms and I love my memories of it, but few retro games can hope to mach the modern plots and characters.

I agree with somegamer, retro is much better, especially because of the hard work they put into the games. The had to get their point across with gameplay. It was much better IMO and the graphics were more appealing. Now with COD everyones views on gaming are messed up and COD obsessed losers think their gamers for spending their lives on it.

Even though I never owned a retro system, I still love them. I find all the modern games to easy, which in turn, makes the game less fun. However, I would have to be middle of the road, since there are still modern games that I like.

superdan: I'm glad someone mentioned the Mother/Earthbound series.  That's one of those examples of why retro games where so great, they had to be intuitive.  Not only did the basics of game design have to be there to make a good game (which some developers today can't do right) there had to be more there to make it stand out as its own game.  Not just some rehash of things already done, which goes along with the whole guns guns guns way of gaming today.

I love both. There are amazing classic titles and there are amazing modern titles. I'd definitely say I prefer the classics overall though. They simply can't be beaten.
