I've grew up watching both and they are both awesome... I can't choose because there are so many varieties and exceptions and not just the typical "anime has a more serious plot line and is more realistic" and "cartoons are just goofy".


If you take the definition of "anime"- it's just Japanese cartoon/animation. And "cartoon" can refer to both animations and 2D illustrations.


And then there's stuff like american-anime, etc. 
I think the real question here has to do with genre and style.

Cartoons are always better to me. Anime can feel so generic sometimes, there is only a handful that I find actually good.

Granted, cartoons can be rather generic as well... They just feel more comforting to relax to. Most good anime I seen/like tends to be serious, or JUST serious enough to need to keep attention to in order to follow what's going on.

It depends on which cartoon it was, but generally I would pick Anime. This is just because I am such an Anime freak its ridiculous. I am especially addicted to One-Piece and Full Metal Alchemist. Those are my favorites. I watch One-Piece when I just want to enjoy a nice laugh, and then I would watch Full Metal Alchemist if I wanted to see a very in depth Anime, and want to feel like I am in suspense. So really, it depends on what mood I am in, but usually I would rather watch Anime then Cartoons.

well in my country we mostly have animé. but i grew up wit h cartoons, then at the age of 6, i started to l ove animé. when i was little my favorite animés were beyblade and pokémon johto adventures. and now i like ones like naruto, black cat, and the little detective konan. i also like cartoons, while some cartoons had humor, like regular show, simpsons, and when i was little i loved tom and jerry and looney toons. so this has to be the hardest choice  for me. but i prefer ....... cartoons. cause thats the one i grew up with .........

Thou I am a big fan of some cartoons anime offers me more when it comes to entertainment value.
I think at this point in my life I have now watched more anime than I have cartoons.

Cartoons are good to pass the time now for me, but anime gives me deep plot lines and constant action. Not to mention the length of some anime series out there, it just seems more than most cartoons can offer.
